transmission

I have a 1992 toyota pickup 2wd 4 cyl with a 5 speed manual trans. When cold starting all is ok until it warms up after a few minutes and then the trans start popping out of gear. This happens to all 5 gears, some I can hold in some I can't. Any advice? Is there something else I can try before a complete rebuild or r/r?

Re: transmission

Unless you're exremely lucky and find that your transmission is really loose from the cluth housing or your engine mounts are shot, it's gonna have to come out. Sorry, no can of snake oil will fix that. That tranny is expensive to rebuild (mine cost $1300 and I took out and re-installed!) I'd check on E-Bay, I've seen a lot of used 5-speeds going for $200-$300. I'd try that first!

Actually I have a similar problem with my 91 2wd. It pops out of 1st and won't engage 3rd at all anymore. I have been told by several people to check some little plastic pieces in the shifter assy. I haven'y had a chance to tear it down yet, but I think there's a similar post with a link to repair info. in this forum. Take off your shifter assy. while the tranny is still in the car and sceck it out...if you see some broken plastic pieces you're in luck, and it will probably run around $20 in parts to fix. If the shifter mechanism looks ok, I'm going to have to agree that the tranny's gotta be torn down. Personally, I recommend trying to get a used tranny to slap back in rather than rebuilding yours, it will probably be less expensive than having it rebuilt.
