digital speedometer on 95 sedan

The digital readout for speed, miles etc on my 95 caprice is acting up. Sometimes it works fine and is really bright, sometime it's gone completely, sometimes really dim. I played with the dimmer switch but that doesn't change anything. Anybody have a clue? Thanks!

I had a caprice that did the same thing. The display module was electrically connected to the instrument panel with spring loaded metal connectors. They didn't actually have springs, but they are shaped such that they press against the panel terminals. take the module off the instrument panel and you'll see what I mean. Just pry these contacts out a little very gently. They'll reseat and you'll be good for a while. I had to do it once a year or so.

Thanks for the info. How do you take the module off the panel without using a chainsaw??

Re: digital speedometer on 95 sedan

Same thing here on my '94. I've heard a myriad of things to do, from replacement, to cleaning, and most often, simply removing and resoldering all the connections. I haven't tried yet. My speedo is usually what goes out at times, but I always have my tripodometer working, it's just the total mileage and speed that usually wigs out on me. That's why I have an aftermarket tach, so I can judge my speed.

It's been a while since I had that vehicle, if I remember correctly it either pulled right off or a couple screws holding it. Take a good look and you'll see.

I was actually able to do it in about an hour, also I wouldn't pry anything, they are liable to break, you can clean the contacts and the connections on the instument cluster with rubbing alcohol and a Q tip, or a good electronic contact cleaner. I put dielectric silicon grease on both before re-assembly, to prevent any further corrosion.

That's the most common repair for that problem. Some guys have gotten good at it and do it on the side for other guys.
Try to find somebody like that. Do a search on some of the other B-body forums (impalassforum, 4adrive, etc) and see if you can find someone in your area.
