Question 97 Blazer Vacuum Switch Location?

Hey all-

I have a 97 Blazer LT. For the past year, I have noticed that my 4HI light randomly would light up and then shut off while driving, sometimes staying lit until I hit the 2HI button (There was never a "click" in the transfer case... seemingly the 4WD never actually engaged). This led me to believe that the electronic push button switch was bad. However, I recently switched the vehicle into 4HI for a recent snow storm, and now it is permanently stuck in 4HI (cannot switch to 2HI, even in neutral). This makes me believe that it is the vacuum switch that I am having a problem with. I have searched this forum and read all of the problems similar to this, but they are all related to not being able to switch "into" 4HI not "out of"! Am I on the right track in believing that it is the vacuum switch I am having a problem with or could it be the encoder motor itself or as originally thought the electronic switch in the dash? Also, if anyone has any insight as to where exactly the vacuum swith lies on/near the transfer case please let me know! I have yet to find it!

Thank for your time and any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Re: 97 Blazer Vacuum Switch Location?

If you read a little deeper, you would have found that some people have successfully reset the computer and encode motor by removing the negative battery terminal. Leave it disconnected for 10 minutes, then bolt it back on snug. Start the truck and hit the 2-Hi button. This should put it right back to where it belongs, as sometimes the control module suffers from what was called "logic lock". If this does not cure it, then read a little more deeply - there have been others that have successfully fixed their problems via different methods. But try the battery disconnect trick before you get any deeper into it.

Thanks for the quick responses!

I have recently replaced my battery which was out for over an hour (had to go buy a new terminal). Still would not switch.

When calling dealership to check price on vacuum switch ($25), they told me it was on top of the transfer case? Just wondering if anyone else with a 97 knows if this is correct?

Thanks again friends!
