87 YJ w/ 4.2 sputtering and hesitations

i have a 1987 YJ Laredo 4.2L automatic... problem is that when accelerating from a stop it will hesitate and sputter until the rpms reach about 2 grand... it's only between 1 and 2 thousand rpms... also, when in gear (drive or reverse) and stoped with my foot on the brake, it idols real rough, almost as if it wants to stall. however, if i'm in park or neutral it idols perfectly fine. it has a brand new fuel pump and fuel filter... any ideas?? i appreciate the help

I restored a 87 wrangler a few years back. I had a lot of problems with the carter carb, I replaced with a weber and did a tfi ignition upgrade the jeep ran like a bandit after that. over time that sputter will turn bigger problem like slowing down it will stall and turning it will stall as well . I did other thing like bypass the emu called the nutter bypass. If you look under other sites you may get more info on these upgrades that are not all that exspensive 450.00 or so but your jeep will run like new.Top end performance has the carbs i will try to find the link on the tfi up grade it will help.

Go there. Same thing was happening with my 89 4.2l 5sp, it only gets worse

Also, you may have a vaccum leak. Make sure your intake manifold it on tight. Seems i have to retighten mine after avery couple trips of bumpy wheelin
