WIP another Mopar

I get alot of Mopar event request. They always want the big Pentastar in the background and the 'Mopar' lettering, so I don't have much room for originality in the background. This piece has been approved and waiting on color (after I get about 3 other designs done that are now in front of it!)

The client actually wanted a demon but I said no.

Don't get me wrong I love ALL MOPAR!!! but I have a problem with the name "demon" (I LOVE Chocolate cake but I can't eat 'devil's food cake either LOL!!!!)

Re: WIP another Mopar

Jeri--great work. Your designs are amazing.

Do you take your own ref photos or have your clients submit pics?

Do you also use hand-drawn sketches to build your vector images or build them from photos like the example in your tutorial?

I'm trying to learn more about your great style.
Got to order your tutorials--will the principles work for someone like me who uses Expression 3 for vector drawing and not Adobe products?

Re: WIP another Mopar

I don't really know anything about Expression 3 but I have found that most vector programs have teh same priciples. The main focuss is Photoshop though. That is wear life goes into the designs.

I used to do all of my cars by sketching, pen and ink. Then scan into the computer to vector or if the scan was clean enough, I would go directly to photoshop for color. I am now limited on space for drawing tables and supplies adn limited on time to complete the designs... so I do all the designs in computer.
As far as photo reference goes, I use some of my own photographs taken at car shows most of the photos I use are supplied by clients and I also use magazines and internet to fill in the blanks for detail that I may have missed in supplied photos.

The Boss design was done from a photo that was emailed to me. I normally customize the cars to make them unique but the boss was done for the sole purpose of teaching illustration technique using the computer. I did not take the time to change it. If it were to be an actuald design that would be mass produced, I would have changed alot and done much more detail.

Re: WIP another Mopar

Jeri--thanks for the answers.

Your designs seem to be composed with a "photographer's eye" view.
There is a photo-realistic quality to you perspective views and proportions. It's great.
That's why I was guessing your were probably a pretty good photographer, too.

You hit on something that may be very different in how I'm working.
I use the E3 vector program for everything, line drawing, colors, even shading/reflection gradients. I haven't had much luck with photoshop, maybe I need to try it again.

Re: WIP another Mopar

Jeri.. your illustrations are wonderful. Leemorris certainly was right regarding your great art. Question? Do you take the entire vector line art to PS to colorize, or do you take different layers separately? And, do you ever take it back to Illy after your done? I tried taking a piece back to Illy, but then couldn't enlarge it because it began to pixelate.. thanks, So gad your a contributor now. Keep up the awesome work. robo

Re: WIP another Mopar

All of my blacklines are done in Illustrator and then I open the design (sometimes in whole sometimes in components) into Photoshop for coloring. The key to keeping the integrity of the design (avoiding pixalation) is to have your design the exact size you wish to have printed at a high resolution aat the time you bring it into Photoshop and do not resize. Oh, and also turning 'OFF' an option called 'anti-alias' where ever it pops up. This take some thinking ahead and confidence in the design while it is still in the blackline stage.

I looked at your gallery Drake, looks good! but I can also see where your colors could be so much more brilliant if done in a program like Photoshop.

At the same time I have to say that I have seen some work done entirely in Illustrator that far exceeds what I have done in Photoshop (but I'd bet it took the artist 5 times longer to accomplish!)

Great colors jeri.

2 questions:

Is the green a separate color or is it mixed? If mixed is it 50/50 blue and yellow?

Question 2:

I love the Road Runner (car). Did you do the entire car as an individual even though it's behind the logo and stuff? If it is an individual what rims are on it?

-Lemorris

p.s. The Road Runner (toon) looks great too.

Re: WIP another Mopar

Lemorris, yes I drew the entire car (always do) but did not finish coloring areas that I knew would be covered. In this case it was a shame to cover the wheels. They would have looked awesome. but with 4 vehicles in a design, I couldn't help it...

I could have made the cars smaller, but I am one of those girls that thinks that size does matter!
