egr valve

My 99 rodeo 3.2 keeps on cutting out in city driving. It has 164k miles and never been in the shop. Apart from the usual maintenance, any thoughts. I have been noticing some threads on egr valves and oxygen sensors but not really familiar with either.

Re: egr valve

sounds like you have the classic IMG (intake manafold gasket problem) There are probably about 5 new people here a week with this problem.

Read through the FAQ's for more maintance questions and answers.

hissing noise

Thanks for the previous response Ryan. I do not know if this problem is related to my idling issue but whnever I step on th gas pedal there is a hissing(whooshing) noise. I thought it maybe a vacuum problem but I have been told you would here that noise whenever you let off the gas. Confused again.

Re: egr valve

Right from the FAQ's

Quote:
Do you have a Rough idle, check engine light on, or air leak noise from under the hood. The Intake gasket breaking may be the cause on the 98 and newer v/6 Trooper and Rodeo.

Re: egr valve

I paid to have my IMG fixed($290-ish), but if you are comfortable working under the hood I do not believe it is that difficult. I almost wish mine happened when it was warmer out because I may have attempted it.

Also it is a good idea to clean the EGR as well.

aitch, if you've gotten 160K plus on the same rig I've got, and I only have 60K, and I've looked after mine pretty well, I hope I can say I'm set (nock on wood)! Have you had any oil consumption issues? These engines are known (but not in every case) to need a large dose of vigilance on watching the oil stick, like every fill up. If you're not aware of the issue, do a search on "oil consumption" and it will be evident.

best of luck

SOLSTER

Hey Solster, probably going through about 1qt per k. I also use mobil1 synthetic. This might sound unusual but I have not even changed the front brakes yet although it feels as if the rotors are warping slightly. Guess this is a job for next weekend. Just turned 165k today.
