97 LX Sport tranny trouble
Hey
My friend has a 97 LX Sport auto, with leaky axle seals. I can replace them, but im looking for some info on how to go about doing this.....I have tons of experience with talons/lasers/eclipses, as well as cavys, but this will be my first tranny on an escort. We got the seals for 10 a piece, and im just lookin for info or a guide to how to replace them and what some of the possible promlems will be.....thanks

Re: 97 LX Sport tranny trouble
Automatic transaxle seal replacement.
1. Jack up car and support with stands. 2. Disconnect the tie rod ends and ball joints from the steering knuckles. 3. Support the engine with a hoist. 4. Remove the crossmember from beneath the transaxle. 5. If you are working on a vehicle with the 1.8L engine, remove the bracket that supports the passenger side driveaxle. 6. Pry the inner ends of the driveaxles out of the transaxle with a flat pry bar. Support the driveaxles with rope or wire. Cautiion. Don't let the driveaxles hang free or the CV joints may be damaged. 7. Pry the seal out of the transaxle bore. 8. Install the new oil seal with a large deep socket and make sure it is completely seated. 9. Install the driveaxles. |

Re: 97 LX Sport tranny trouble
I've never pulled a tranny. So can't help you out. It would be my guess to pull the axles,
disconnect all the elctrical connections, support the engine and disconnect front and rear mounts on the tranny, disconnect the cooling lines to the radiator, pull the exhaust remove the bottom cover on the bell housing, pull the bolts out of the torque converter, pull out the bell housing bolts and the tranny should drop right down with a floor jack under it. Good luck. Dave |
