What type of trans do I need

I have recently purchased a 1987 BMW 735i. I need to buy a transmission for it, but since it does not have one at all, I have no part numbers, so I am having trouble knowing what to look for. The engine size is 3.4. The shock tower says, "Engine Model Family-535, 635, 735". How do I know what trans I need?

Your model 735 is an early E32, which was fitted with a four (forward) speed transmission, model number 4HP 22 EH. The reference to 'Model Family' is just in relation to the model type, 5, 6 and 7 series, all sharing the same six cylinder 3.5 litre engine, though in reality it's actually 3.440 litre or thereabouts. All 735's would have been fitted with this tranny, up until the end of production in 1992, with very little difference, although one thing to look out for is the multi pin plug that connects to the tranny. This carries information back to the obc and in some cases it is a seven pin, or sometimes an eight pin plug. Whichever one it is, make sure the tranny you get matches up with this arrangement. Hope this helps.
