Golf Crank Seal Replacement

I have removed the 5 speed from my 92 Golf 1.6 diesel to find a lot of crankcase oil inside the bell housing. Obviously at least part of the reason it slips at hyway speeds oftentimes. Any trick to replacing the crank seal ? Do I have to remove the oil pan, crank, caps to change the seal ?

I just got back under it and it`s cool. You do NOT have to remove the pan.crank... it has a plate with a nylon gasket behind it and lo and behold the damned seal slips over the OD of the crank !!! Hopefully a new seal will stop all the leakage going into the bell housing and giving the clutch problems.
