Re: 1997 Grand Am will NOT SHUT OFF PLEASE HELP

Welcome to the forum. Is the steering column jammed?. If not you need a new igntion switch.

Edit- Also make sure the car is firmly in park. To make sure put up on the shifter while trying to remove the key.

Good Luck

John

Also, jiggle the sterring wheel a bit while turning key, the wheel has a pawl that wears, which sometimes won't allow the cylinder to turn completely unless ya juggle the wheel a bit.

I had this problem as well. I had removed the pin from the gear selector to clean it and lost the pin. If the gear selector is not seated properly the rod inside will not unlock the ignition allowing you to remove key.

Hope this helps
