2000 Maxima Stalling during idle
Hi:
I have been having a problem for the past few weeks with my 2000 maxima. The car will start fine, but after it warms up it will stall. I can restart and let it idle a few minutes and it will stall again. The check engine light is not on and when I had it checked there were no fault codes. I have: - Cleaned the throttle body - replaced both upstream O2 sensors - Checked most of the sensors - I have about 1.7VDC out of the mass airflow sensor at idle I also have a problem with hesitation during acceleration. When I hard accellerate, the RPMs go up but the car feels like it is being held back. I have checked the output from the TPS and get about .5-4VDC when I push the throttle. Anyone have any suggestions?? J |

Boy does that scream fuel pump, or fuel delivery of some sort. Check out the fuel pump first, I bet that's it.

During warmup ECU uses the TPS. Then TPS is used only by TCU =auto transmission, and O2 sensor(s) input to ECU come in place of TPS. Coolant Temp sensor ok? Plugs swap time, Ign coils leaking, injectors time is up. Check/swap all Filters. MAF: should have linear voltage increase as u open throttle, engine running. TPS resistance, engine off, meas from connector: linear resistance increase while throttle is turned. And as already mentioned: fuel pressure.

Sounds like a fuel blockage of some sort....replace the fuel filter or run a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in your next tank of gas.

My Maxima is doing the same thing, the mechanic says it's probably an idle air control valve but can't guarantee that if he replaces it that it'll fix the problem and I'm not sure that I want to spend $450 for him to experiment.

Re: 2000 Maxima Stalling during idle
See my post about what I did to my Idle control value. (Idle control value question) It was about a 15 minute job and the car is like brand new, well almost. I am going to get a new one when time and money permits.

VGE IACV cleanup is easy, on VE theres more work. Some do it by squirting cleaner spray into IACV air input hose; needs attached extension hose bit with a small hose to squirt intake cleaner spray in while idling. Surely helps; functional operation cannot be verified, cleaning is not perfect, and all soot that is let loose, gets into engine (not too bad). I would rather do that than do nothin. . |

Re: 2000 Maxima Stalling during idle
The post is on this forum under "Idle air control value question". I cleaned the entire throttle body. Its not that hard of a job to take off and clean good. It didn't fix the cut out at idle speed. I then took the idle air control value off, two(2) screws and the wire harness and sanded the value tip with 600 sandpaper, just to see what would happen, it helped a lot, a real lot. Of course now I should buy a new one to really fix it. List price is $240 and discount is $180. Still a lot of money.

Re: 2000 Maxima Stalling during idle
Sorry I have not replied lately, been out of town.
I have done most of the items listed, thanks for all of the replies. However, the car is still stalling. I broke down and took it to the Nissan dealership. They said they did not know what was wrong but wanted to charge me an arm and leg to replace the idle air control valve. I found a used one on Ebay and ordered it (about $30) I also took the throttle body apart, cleaned it real good, and reassembled according to Nissan specs (I downloaded a service manual for the 2000 maxima from Phatg20.net). Bottom line, it is NOT the iacv or any type of setup in the tPS. The stepper motor in the iacv works perfectly. The used iacv I ordered from ebay works exactly like the one in my car. My next step is to disassemble the fuel system, clean it out good, and possibly replace the pressure regulator and damper. I have made one discovery, however, the stall at idle only happens when the throttle closed switch is activated. If I just move the throttle a bit off the closed position the car will not stall. |

How about PCV? TPS affect only when cold.
