what happens when you try to put in into gear? does it grind or does the stick go all the way to where 1st should be and nothing happens?

does the clutch pedal swing or come up really slow or stay down? if so you might just need some fluid

Re: HELP 90 gxl wont go into gear when running

If you can shift it freely while the car is off, my money would be on the pilot bearing. I had that exact problem with a 90 GXL I sold. $8 later (and 4 hours later) the tranny shifted perfectly.

Well...if the pedal went down and you had to pump it, have someone sit in the car and depress the clutch and watch under the hood for the range it is getting. Probably is your slave cylinder. Try bleeding it first...maybe air is in the line.
