Bloody irritating red light

I have a '93 Ford Escort 1.9L (standard) with no tachometer. On my dash, below and to the left of the instrument cluster, just to the left of the instrument panel light dimmer is a little light that I thought was a shift indicator light. Trouble is it has now taken to staying on almost all the time even when car is not running with no key in the ignition. If anyone has any idea what this light truly is and/or why it would stay on like this please let me know. Thanks.
