Question Car Not Starting

Driving one day, car started to vibrate, then cut off. Tried to start again, ran for about 30 secs cut off, attempted 3 or 4 times, eventually towed car home.

Pondered and found that spark plug wire on cyclinder 2 broken, removed wire and its pieces and then removed spark plugs.

Replaced plugs and wires.

Car attempts to start but doesn't start.

Suggestions I looked over already.

Plugs are getting enough spark and fuel.

Change new plugs since they may be damp w/ fuel.

Ignition coil may be damaged, in process of removing rotor and coil, damaged rotor, replaced entire distributor w/ exception of cap retested for spark - good.

Attempts to start the car rapidly drains the battery

New distriubtor, new plugs, new wires, car still doesn't start, could this be a possible starter problem.???

Thanks to all in advance......

Re: Car Not Starting

unless you cant hear the starter engaging or it just spinning, i doubt starter.
i was at first thinking ignition related possibley but you have replaced the dizzy so that should be elimanted unless you missed connecting something (very hard to do when there is only 3 plugs.) make sure you got plug wires in right order.
do you hear the fuel pump priming when you turn the key to the "ON" posistion? go from there i suggest.

edit: just read about you getting fuel so that ruins that theory. so the only thing i can suggest is making sure you have your wires in order on the spark plugs. you have all the connections good on the dizzy.
check your timing? possible you jumped a tooth on your belt?

Re: Car Not Starting

checked timing before couldn't have been better marks line up per repair manual and I checked and double checked wiring order.....I guess the question is what damage is or can be, caused when the second spark plug/ignition wire breaks ....

** I did not replace the distributor cap, reused the old one.

Re: Car Not Starting

check your valve lash too. if theyre set too tight the car wont get enough air or wont be putting enough out the cause combustion easily....now that i think of it...maybe your intake is so clogged that it wont start or maybe sumthing of that matter is wrong....try cleaning out your intake too with a spray, spraying it in form the tube and in the whole where your pcv valve is....then when u crank it press the gas pedal in and out til it gets the air in to start it....then rev it real high to get the carbon build up out....but first start with the valve lash....im sure it has something to do with the car not getting enough air.

too tight of valve clearance (valve lash) the valves will actually not fully seat. meaning they r also opening too much, not too little.

Re: Car Not Starting

ok, for a basic internal combustion engine to run, you need 3 things... Air, Fuel, and Spark. You said u know youre getting spark, so we can rule that out. How do u know youre getting enough fuel?? are all your injectors firing? could it be a fuel filter? What about your air cleaner?? i know it sounds obvious, but youd be surprised how many people overlook the air filter. check those things and get back to us.

oh ya, and have u done a compression test??

Re: Car Not Starting

Thanks for the reply guys..

I'll start checking these things as soon as the sun comes up tomorrow..

Fuel filter was replace one month ago before this happened w/ brand new one, around the same time I did a valve adjustment, performance was very good at that time.

Didn't do a compression test.

Engine turns over just fine same as before, but I will also recheck this.

However I will recheck the valves, and the air intake

yes and no

for fire u need air, fuel, spark
for an internal combustion engine u need 4 things, which u did later illude to; air, fuel, spark, compression. just tryin to make sure everyone else knows to check compression too.
