HOW TO: Aftermarket tach install with adaptor.

Well i just spend the last 30-40 min diggin through old posts on this topic for my own sake, and thought since there has been alot of questioning about it, here is a brief write up.

well you have the same engine is me and i did it on mine. Took me about 15 mins to do. On your engine on the right side of the coil pack there is 2 harness's. A 2 pin and a 6 pin. You have to cut the pink wire on the 2 pin harness and hook up each red wire from the adaptor. Then ground the adaptor and run the other wire to the tach. After that just run your power and ground for the tach and thats it. You'll need a tach adaptor and make sure to get the autometer one. is it possible to install the tach in a cavalier that did not come with a factory one, if so is it possible to put it in with out the adaptor

yes and yes, however you will need a tach you can set at 2 cylinders, since you will only get half the reading, and you need to splice into 1 wire thats connected to your PCM (computer), with a fair amount of research im sure you can find out which wire it is, but its way easier just to get the tach adaptor (easier, not cheaper)

Thanks, do you know off hand how much i would be lookin at for a tach adaptor

its not hard to do it without a tach adapter. when you order the tach just ask if it comes with instructions for a cavalier...it will tell u what wire to splice and exactly how to do it...i did in in like 20 minutes...im not sure if it runs at only half but i think it does....o well

On your PCM locate wire 10 (in your manual it should connect to the TP Sensor). Connect it there. (FYI PCM is NOT under the air filter, rather in the right side wheel well behind the evaporative canister)

good question, is an adapter needed for a second gen with the 2.2 tbi? i'm getting a tach sent to me for my car, and i wanna know before i start installing it

Unless it has a setting for 2 cylinders, yes.
