Sorry, Newbish question...

when are you ready to step up to a sportier bike

I want to get a new liter bike (R1) because i can get it a cost like $5xxx but also because i hate cruisers (my current bike) and want to pick up hot 2f2f chicks lol

i rode about 2 seasons (~5000 miles) on a yamaha vstar 650 (mommies bike) and i feel i learned a lot, shifting a manual (rode before i drove a car) downshifting, turning off indicators, slow turns, leaning, not losing control when your ass flys out on wet ground, more importantly i feel that i learned paying attetion and being aware of your suroundings, also general saftey like hand signals.

the question i am posing to you is this, at what point does everyone feel one is ready to go to a liter bike from a slower bike (vtwin cruiser in my case)?

In my opinion, you might want to pick up a newer 600 or an older 750 sport bike before buying brand spankin new ~150 rwhp (ballpark) 05 R1. Sportbikes are completely different breed than your current bike, and you might find yourself satisfied with a 600 or 750, lot of guy do. Even people with 20 years of riding experience are intimidated with big bores, some people downgrade to 600/750.

When you're ready is up to you, when you feel ready. So you might want to test-ride R1 to see it for yourself before buying. There's no point in getting it if you can't ride it with absolute confidence, otherwise these bikes bite hard!

i think it depends on physical size.

i went from a 250 to a 750 then to my 954.

954 or any litre bike is insanely quick. i wouldn't recommend it. maybe a 2000 R1 at best but upgrade in steps.

That too, but the new 600s are about as fast or faster than that Gixxer.

2000 R1 is great, but I'm all for FI now, personally I'm having pain in the ass with carbs. Plus I hate the warm up period. So that might be another reason to look newer. Pertinent to the topic, the thing is that 98-01 R1s throttle is nowhere near as smooth as 02+

Anyway, check out the 00-05 gsxr 750s as well, top-end is close to literbikes and inverted forks.

Sorry for suggesting you other options, but as Aussie mentioned, it's better upgrade step by step.

Re: Sorry, Newbish question...

about physical size im 6,3 so i cant get on a dirt bike sized motorcyle, and i suggested the r1 cause of its sexiness (IMO) but i can get almost any bike for the price of a used one, the R1 is the only one that i "tried on" and i think i fit well.
i do appreciate the sugestions i mean i will prolly never take it to a track, and i wont be going over the speed limit, just picking up the 2f2f chicks lol

Re: Sorry, Newbish question...

Baybee (since you are into that 2f2f crap), if all you want is a curb monkey (which is a 2f2f chick) then just walk up to them after getting off any "ninja bike" and say "hey, I like sex"... Curb monkeys don't require any "real" bike to be impressed... honest. All they need is something with 3 legs to get off a 2-wheeler. They couldn't care less about the ponies running the 2 wheels. Hell, most aren't smart enough to spell R1!

Hate to burst your bubble, but a real girl knows better.

lol, that was hillarious.

In all honesty, I don't think any girl would particularly like riding on the passenger seat of R1, it sucks, pain factor is way up.

Re: Sorry, Newbish question...

I've spent about an hour on the back of an R1... I will NEVER AGAIN spend ANY time on the back seat of an R1 EVER! My ass still hurts, and it was 2 years ago!!!

and i can only get a kawasaki/yamaha at wholesale, no susuki's so now its deciding between the r1 and the zx10r.

keep the front wheel down dude, there's enough factors in the streets to get us killed. ZX-10R power is its vice, the most powerful literbike currently, you better do your math and pray some every time you ride it, hehe. Am I mistaken, or are you 17-18 years of age? hopefully you have a mature head beyond your years, ride safe. IMO, don't get a literbike just yet.

Re: Sorry, Newbish question...

i am mature for my age, 18, like i said i rode from 15 to 17 and i put my bike in the garage after my friend got Tboned on a honda by a soccer mom in a yukon. but i feel that im ready to start riding again

ohh and when i lifted the wheel up, it was just from rolling the thottle, not trying to get it up, i didnt even snap the throttle, in the Vstar you couldnt get the wheel up in first gear with the clutch.

and Z fanatic i can see that you are right i would prolly end up doing something stupid on a liter bike (even though im a teenager and thus invincible and infallable) <====JK ill get a 600 just to get used to a high revving 4 cyl then maybe next year ill get a liter, now, i gotto decide between the R6 and the ZX6r...

Re: Sorry, Newbish question...

she is right, girls like that don't really care what you are riding. See my girl is a rider to and that's what i like. Give me a girl that ant scared to turn that thing and if you let her (i don't) bust a wheele for ya. You get one of them damn curb chicks they always wanna ride with you and i'm sorry it's much more fun riding with no one on the back moving and looking around, you have to keep telling them "when i turn please stop pulling you body the other way"

I'm not a big fan of the R1's if it's not honda it's not for me. But if you got hook ups then have at it. Just my

You were only in 5th gear at 60 mph, presumably very low in the rpm range, and the front wheel still left the ground. Imagine having to get on the gas hard on 2nd gear to beat the traffic.

2-3 years ago, you could only pull 3rd gear wheelies with literbikes, and now they're doing 6th gear wheelies no doubt. Even ZX-6R is doing 3rd gear wheelies. So much power for the crowded streets.

It's much better decision for you to opt for a middleweight. Have fun choosing!

I would go with the R6. a lot of the newer 600's are not quite as fast as the litre bikes but will still make you say oh shit when you twist that throttle. i thought about getting the new R6 but i decided to get something older first in case i drop it. i probably move up from my 1992 F2 to an R6 or a 600RR next year or the year after. only b/c i heard the newer middleweights are crazy fast even though it's "only" a 600. good luck and let us know what you decide!!

he he. i had a couple of chunky chicks try it on one day asking for a ride. i said (not thinking 100%) that my bike was weight restricted. oops!

any way one of them said that she rode a Yamaha R33. not sure if she knows the difference between Yamaha and Nissan
