No torque converter lock or overdrive?
Hi,
My 95 Aurora has a problem. When I start out from a stop, it shifts 4 times. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, OD? It used to, at about 50 mph slow the engine even farther. I think that was the torque converter lock kicking in. Am I correct? At about 45-50 mph the SES light comes on. It goese off whe nthe engine is restarted. Being that it is an 95 with OBDI, it is not easy or cheap to get the code checked. Does anyone have any ideas what this may be and how to fix it? If it is the torque converter, could it be one of the transmission solenoids I hear so much about or is it a more serious problem? Please help. |

I'm not trying to nit pick but don't forget that you set out in first gear then shift to second shift to third shift to od. (three shifts)
Maybe your third gear is slipping. Then the torque converter lock kicks in. A transmission shop may do the scan for free if they 'think' you will pay to have repairs done there. But I could be wrong I was once and it lasted for 59 years.

I own a 1998 Aurora with the same problem. When scanned the code P0174 comes up - TCC solenoid stuck in closed postion. My vehicle does go through all of the gears very nicely but the lock does not kick in. I serviced the transmission and that got rid of the SES light for about 2 weeks. I'm told that the TCC solenoid is not prone to break-down so I've been advised to check for electrical faults up to, and at, the transmission plug. I've not done that yet. Another tech told me that it could be something as simple as a burned out brake light bulb seeing as the TCC solenoid is linked to the switch at the brake pedal. Well, I noticed last night that I do, indeed, have a brake light bulb out but my wife took off with the vehicle this morning before I had a chance to replace it. If I come up with any answers I'll advise accordingly.

I'm pretty sure the trans is not slipping. When I watch the tach, it varies like when the torque converter is not locked. I also noted the cruise control stopped wotking the same time the change in the tach readings occured.
I'll check the brake lights. I heard that can happen on a mid 90's STS too. |

Re: No torque converter lock or overdrive?
You probrably have a bad torque convertor clutch soleniod. I had to replace mine in my 95 Aurora. The check engine light will only come on when the ecm commands the torque convertor to lock up. It is very easy to check with a scan tool. The bad news is that it is not easy to get to. It is in the side cover of the trany which means that you have to remove the transmission to change the 30 dollar solenoid. If you do have to replace this solenoid replace the filter. Yes GM hid a real filter in the side cover. All that is in the trany pan is what they call scavenger filters, just screens.

Thanks for the input. I'll try to get it scanned to confirm.
Let me assk another question. If I go that far, would it be best to replace the other solenoids at the same time? They seem to be a week link. |

Re: No torque converter lock or overdrive?
The criuse not working is a good clue. Both systems work off the brake peddle switch. I pulled the bottm cover from the dash to install a cd changer and knocked something out off whack. No cruise, SES comes on over 45 when the lockup should happen, resets when shutt off. Everything looks ok, but it all happened at the exact same time so I know that's the problem. Been driving like that for the last several months. When it warms up maybe I will crawl back under there to try and figure it out.

Re: No torque converter lock or overdrive?
It wouldn't hurt to change whatever your wallet will handle while your in that side cover. There are 2 solenoids in the bottom pan that I think are for 1-2 & 2-3 shifts i wouldn't worry with them they are easy to change when needed, but all that are inside the side cover wouldn't hurt.
