Unhappy Hrmmm....

Ok, the first official thing has gone wrong with the 300zx.

When i hit about 55kmh (33m/h) i get some vibration through the car. it gets worse and worse up to about 90kmh (55m/h) and the it sort of fades off. any ideas what this could be??

I dont know if its related but im getting this strange hot smell coming out from the car after i have been driving it too.

Being you gave a general question, I'll give a general answer.
It could be tires, drive shaft, carrier bearing or some other little things. If you tell us how long this has been doing this, and what was or has been added when it started or if nothing added than what areas of the car it's in would help.

Re: Hrmmm....

yeah, maybe as simple as a rotation/alighnment.

as for the smell make sure all the connections to the PTU are good and not loose or corroded, when one of the wires to the ptu on my car was cut in half by the a/c pulley it got a bad conection with the ptu and it smelled wierd. try that

Re: Hrmmm....

It sounds like a tire balance issue with a bit of a alignment problem. I had the same problem untill today with the vibration except mine picked up at 55MPH (80ish Km/h) and continued to get worse untill 80MPH (Alot Km/h dont feel like doing the conversion in my head, I know the math 1.6 X Miles = km) But I knew it was my alignment. The front toe was out and my rear camber was off to. But it was the front toe doing most of the vibrating, that and my wheels being out of balance. Set my alignment today at work kept some camber in the rears for handling reasons, but dialed out my front toe to near 0deg. Get a alignment check and a wheel balance with road force check too. This will check to see if the tires are not comming apart or out of round this will cause one hell of a vibration up to certain speeds then go away then come back at higher speeds.

Sorry about the generalness.

Ok it started after one or 2 nights of 'fun' driving with my mate.

One person i asked said it might be the tail shaft coming loose because apparently that is a common problem with older 300zxs that have been driven hard.

The smell is the wierd part of it to me though. What is the PTU?? It doesnt smell like burnt rubber and i dont think its the brakes either even though they are pretty bad. im getting the disks skimmed and new pads this week.

The smell seems to be MUCH more noticeable from around the right hand side, particularly the rear tire area.

My car doesnt seem to be pulling in any direction when i drive so i dont think its the alignment. Thanks for the help so far.

it could still be a tire not balanced correctly...it could also be the driveshaft, carrier bearing like Al said.

I kinda had the same problem with mine. After checking the alinement, balance and drive shaft, found everything OK, but had this strange shimmy at 180MPH (288KPH) to 185MPH (296KPH) desided to replace my subframe bushings and it cured my problem. The Zed is a high strung car and even the smallest thing out of tweek does strange things.

Re: Hrmmm....

LOL a slight shimmy at 180MPH........

You may want to check your exhaust system, it maybe rubbing against something causeing a vibraition and the smell. My freinds Foxbody mustang exhaust rubbed against his right rear wheel and caused one hell of a stench and vibrated till we replaced the tire.

Speaking of which...I'm going to have to pickup a 190mph Euro speedo when I'm in Germany this May.

"How fast does it go?"

"Don't know, gauge only goes up to 190"

AHAHAHAHAHAHAA...thats going to kick ass...

Anyone know if I can just pull the speedo part of the gauge cluster? That way I can keep the US boost gauge part, no matter how unplugged it will be, and the correct mileage for my car.

If you really want one Broke a guy in Calif. is selling them with the origenal boost gage window in it.
I like that statement, "I don't know, my speedometer only goes to 190MPH".
