Question buying a used '89 F-150

I'm wonderig if anyone wouldn't mind sharing insight and opinions regarding a purchase I'm considering: 1989 F-150 Lariat. 6 cyl, 4wd, with 206K miles. The asking price, $2800, is a bit above KBB's $1800.

The body is all original and in tip-top shape. It runs pretty good, however a gasoline smell was noticeable when we started it up. It has sat for a while (several months). Is this smell a tell-tale of a problem ?

Any comments are more than welcome.

Personally, I think thats high. At 206,000 miles, anything, could happen. The 300-6 cyl. engine has a reputation for running a very long time, but the truck is likely to need four wheel drive parts and who know what else. I'm asssuming it is 5sp manual, but if it is an automatic I would be even more cautious. I would offer him $1800, but not a penny more.

be careful, at that age with that many miles, you could be in for some headaches. yes the 300 is well known to run a long time, but that depends soley on who owened it and if it was maintained properly. thats high priced where i live. to me, its an 800 to 1000 dollar truck. unless all service records are provided to you, you have to figure another 1000 dollars for tune-up, brakes, tires, u-joints, hoses, exhaust, ect. by the time you figure that in, for the same price you can get something 3yrs. newer and/or half the mileage.

I would offer 2400, i dont know what the other guy was thinking when he said 1800.. You will not get a nice truck for 1800. If the truck looks good, has nice interior, runs good, i'd say go for it. i have a 300 I-6 and love it..
