Probem Number 1 Are They Connected?

Ok here it is.

The temperature once the car gets up to 210 soars to 240 for about a minute then comes back down to 210. Here is what i have already checked. I checked upper radiator hose and is half cold then where the stat is it is warm. Could there be a block in there. Second could it be the thermostat? I replaced it in August and could it be getting stuck open then closing? Third i checked my oil since I did a change on Saturday. There was no coolant on the stick or in the oil that came out. I am planning to try and flush the system, maybe put a new upper radiator hose on if that looks shot even though it should not be and a new thermostat. What is the name of the plastic that you can get to put over the the hoses? Now when i looked at my oil there seemed to be some water on the inside of the cap and a yogurty looking white stuff on one spot. I checked that today because i smelled something burning but i think i might have gotten water splashed up there. So if anyone has any ideas let me know?

the white yogart paste is on the oil filler cap? if so it is conensation. the engine is not getting up to normal temperature or you are only driving very short distances in cold weather. could the therostat be stuck open ant the temp gauge not working?

Re: Probem Number 1 Are They Connected?

Well lately i only drive 3 miles to school and 10 round trip to work. I replaced the rad cap with a Stant Lev-R-Vent in January. I checked the fluid and its filled. It is very cold outside. Like that white stuff is below the cap right at the top of the neck.

Re: Probem Number 1 Are They Connected?

did you check the level in the rad when the engine was dead cold?

Also, it is not uncommon for the temperature to go above 210 to pop the stat open.

Re: Probem Number 1 Are They Connected?

yes because i thought that i should to see if it was leaking somewhere else before and after and its all good. But shouldn't it not go above 210 if its new, i know what you are saying but i just think it would not. Would you recommend changing out the stat its only a couple of bucks and running a flush? Just makes you nervous when it shoots up.

Re: Probem Number 1 Are They Connected?

I would say you probably have a blockage somewhere in the system or a bad thermostat..

Re: Probem Number 1 Are They Connected?

thats could be true. This thermostat the guy sold me was rated to 190 and i wanted the one rated to 205 but he told it was standard. If i replace it im getting 205. I replaced the belt for inspection last week so thats not causing it.

Re: Probem Number 1 Are They Connected?

The lower the temp the better. Optimal is between 195 and 200

It is completely common for a thermostat and temperature to go above 210 before it pops open, I see it with all my vehicles.

It is normal.
