VR6 idle issues other questions

Hi all.
I've search for an answer to this, but having trouble finding more specific info.
My 97 VR6 has an idling problem where the rpms will drop off to nothing, almost die then engine will rev back up past 1000. I've been told it could possibly be the idle control valve, but I'd like to have a better idea before I send it to a shop or pull it out myself.

Also wondering if anyones ever heard of a preformance coil pack for the VR6???
