1970 chevelle trany questions.
Hi, I just bought a 1970 chevelle malibu with a 307. it is an automatic. I got it to start but when i put it into gear. it doesn't move. does it have something to do with the tranny, it has fluid. but i am hoping that it may be something simple so that i don't have to replace the transmission.
Thanks. |

Does it have a drive shaft? (look under car) if so when the car is shifted is the linkage moving on the trans? if so and the fluid is filled to operating level, the trans might not be any good. i.e. might need a filter change, might need a torque converter, might need a complete overhaul. Depending on your bank account, you might want to find a used replacement. Turbo 350's are a dime a dozen, in other words a lot a GM cars came with this trans.

Re: 1970 chevelle trany questions.
When you put it into gear did you feel a load on the engine? did the engine rock on it's motor mounts? If a car sits for awhile the tork converter will drain and force fluid out of the over flow tube on the side of the trans. Just add a Qt of ATF dextron. let it idle then start shifting from forward to reverse.

There have been many great suggestions, and I'll just add a couple:
1)Make sure fluid is to the top of the full mark (with the engine running and in Park) and NOT burnt smelling. Sometimes the pump gears break and the pump does pick up the fluid, so it will read high, but it's not. Also make sure it's the right dipstick. If you're not sure it's accurate, you can check the level by cracking the pan gasket a bit to see if it spills over. 2) Check the external linkage to make sure it's getting a full throw. Sometimes the nut that holds the level onto the side of the trans comes loose and nothing moves. Another potential problem is that the internal linkage came apart. A pan exam will reveal that. 3)Check the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Make sure the converter is bolted to the flexplate and that the flexplate and converter turn with the crank. (sounds wierd, but I've seen sheared flexplates, at the crank) 4) Lastly, if the fuid is up and clean, the linkage ratcheting firmly, driveshaft is in place, flexplate/converter tight and she still doesn't engage....stop shopping for a used or rebuilt unit. Yours is a short-shaft and must come from a Chevy small block. Not Buick/Olds/Pontiac. Good luck. BB |
