89 jeep

Hi,
I have a 89 YJ that stalls, backfires and dies when damp outside and I have the lights or turnsignal, windshield wipers on. Why would these electrical things have anything to do with the engine performance? I just had a tune up new wires, spark plugs, rotor pcv valve, they cleaned the thottle body and combustion chamber. Distributor cap, o2 sensor, cat convertor. The Jeep runs on when I shut it off they told me that they cannot adjust the timeing any more. Should I find someone else to work on my Jeep?

Thanks, jean

Cool Re: 89 jeep

I had similar problems with my 88 wrangler, and like you I started replacing electrical parts including the coil. The thing that did the trick was the electronic ignition control module. It is located under the antifreeze reservoir on the driver's side of my 88 wrangler. The part was about $65 but only took 15 minutes to put in.It was driving me nuts because it would run just fine one minute then not start the next, even after I had it in the shop.If you buy a chilton manual for your jeep and have a good electrical multitester you can run the primary & secondary electrical systems check. The chilton manual walks you through the process step by step, and wil by process of elimination tell you which component is most likely bad.I wish I would have done this before wasting money on parts I didn't need to replace,GOOD LUCK.

Does it stall, backfire , and die when you don't have them on? or is it just when those components are on?
