New here, Need help!!!!!
Hey everyone, my name is scott and im new here. I am looking at getting an eclipse, but have no clue about them (i'm a GM guy). I am looking at a GS with heavy mods done to it including a stage 2 turbo. Here is the link with pics and an explanation of all that comes with it. It it safe for me to get a GS with all that stuff done to it? or was that engine not made to be turboed? Also is this an overall good deal for 11 grand? I really wanted to find a 97-99 GST or GSX for cheaper, but this is the closest I can do to my location in Brookfield, WI.
Please throw all your opinions out at me and if thats not a good idea, what is a good idea? I really wanna get a DSM cause my 15.2 second cavalier z24 isnt cutting it for me anymore. Plus I got about 12 grand saved up for something. THrow out as many ideas about anything to me... i want to know as much about these cars as I know about GM cars. Also what are some good aftermarket brand names for DSM's? like intakes, exhaust, downpipe, brakes, tires, anything. Last question.... is the GSX a LOT better than the GST or a turbo GS? I heard they break down a lot and are really expenseive to maintain with the AWD. give me your 2 cents. THanks everyone in advance. Scott |

Re: New here, Need help!!!!!
I think you forgot to post the link.
Anyway, there are people that have put a turbo on a GS or RS but you definately have to do some prep work on the motor, depending on the boost level you want to run. Look here, http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=200222 Lots of good information there. I would recommend you keep searching and go for a GSX or GST. 11k for a GS with a turbo is really high. You would do much better buying a GST or GSX and using the extra money for mods. As far as the GSX vs. the GST, the only difference is that the GSX is AWD, which will provide you with a much better launch off the line. Downfall is that GSX's are harder to find. Summary: Save your money until you find a GST or GSX and buy that. Hope this helps! Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Re: New here, Need help!!!!!
Did you also look around for an Eagle Talon?
TSi = GST TSi AWD = GSX They are the same mechanically but with a little different body style.

Re: New here, Need help!!!!!
The RS and GS have a totally different engine than the GST and GSX. The GST and GSX have the tubocharged 4G63 engine that's in the all the Mitsubishi Evolutions. It is capable of 400-500 hp and 10 second 1/4's on stock internals. The RS and GS have the 420a motor from Chrystler and the internals have to be replaced if you turbo it. The turbo models respond really well to cheep mods for lots of power. 12's have been done on as low as $700 in mods. I'd wait for a GSX or if you cant find one then a GST.

Re: New here, Need help!!!!!
WELCOME Future DSMer!!! I am glad to see that you have realized that GM should die and time to come on over.
I agree, I would wait for the GST or GSX. Also check out the Talon :-) I have one...it works for me. The only difference is (as said above) the AWD in the GSX. You loose a little top end, but your acceleration off the line is obviously superior. However, I like the challange of trying to master the FWD, but that is up to you. As for unreliablity...any of the guys on here will tell you that DSM's tend to break down, and require maintainence. however, if you keep tabs on what is going on on your car (and keep track of the things that happen at certain kms) then you should be set. After all, this is a sports car right? All sports cars are obviously going to require more work and have more issues, as they are going to be driven harder than many other cars. As for brands, all people have difference preferences and different things are better in different areas. You are best to ask for opinions on when you are going to buy something. Check out www.dsmtuners.com for their tuning guide on a way to go about adding things to your car, it works really well. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on this board, and you will be well taken care of on here. Welcome (hopefully). :-)

Re: New here, Need help!!!!!
You can get a 99 GSX for that much money. Don't accept anything but the best... wait for a GSX/TSi, and for 10k+ it better be pristine, stock, and have under 50k miles with all the options.

thanks everyone so far. I think I will wait to get a GST or GSX. Everywhere I look though I see GSXs for about 12k with high miles. Anyone out there selling or know anyone or a site where they're selling one? Ideally, i'd like to find a 97-99 GSX with under 70k miles for about 10k. However, Ive looked for about 2 months now and can't find anything.
Also, I checked out that DSM tuners site and signed up - I'll prolly follow that guide to mod my car - one of my buddies has a 97 talon TSI AWD and the other a 92 eclipse GSX that runs low 13's with just an aftermarket turbo and BOV. So they can also help me mod it.... its finding the car thats gonna be rough. Question... with maintenance - both of my friends have real bad tranny problems, as a matter of fact, the 92 is getting a new engineer racing tranny put it right now cuz his 2nd and 3rd synchros are real fucked. Is this common in most of them? I've also heard problems with the timing belts and crank walk? Can you explain this to me? Thanks so far to everyone. |

Quote:
It took me 2 years to find my GSX. I got it for $11,000. There is a lot of info on crankwalk if you look. It's somewhat rare and normally only happens to 95-99 7 bolt engines.
