Changing to 4X4 Full time??
I have an 88 jeep cherokee cheif 4.0 litre with command trac and it only has 1 wheel up front that spins when I put it in 4H. I only have the option of 2H, 4H, N, 4L. I have read that selec trac and rock trac and some newer quadra trac have the option of having both wheels up front spin and was wondering what I may have to do to get both wheels up front to spin at the same time instead of just on wheel spinning. Do I need to find a selec trac transfer case?? Or a new front drive axle?? Or is there any way of getting rid of my part time and just convert it to full time? Any idea's? I would apriciate your help. Thanks ahead of time.

Re: Changing to 4X4 Full time??
There is a 88 Jeep T-case that has full time 4, not sure the numbers off of it, but its in the Limited models with the AW4 tranny. As far as your front axle issue, you can get an air locker installed for about $1500. Does your 88 have the vacuum motor on the axle housing? If so you MIGHT be able to put a simple locker in the front(Lock-Right).

Re: Changing to 4X4 Full time??
As noted above, what you want is a locking or limited slip differential for the front axle. The transfer case has nothing to do with how many front wheels will spin.
The '88s should have the front axle vacuum disconnect, so a limited slip will work in the front. If you don't have an axle disconnect, a limited slip front differential WILL produce very strange handling and steering even in 2wd. Finally, do you have a limited slip diff in the back? If not start with putting one in back there. It is cheaper and easier than one in the front. |

Re: Changing to 4X4 Full time??
I would recomend a lock-right or similar locker.I have had 2 myself and I know other people who have used them and they are very dependable and they work very well. The only thing is don't use 4wd on dry pavement because it does have an effect on handling but in 2wd you won't even know it's there.
