Have a 1996 Sunfire GT - 2.4L... Started running real rough, idles way to low, engine is jumping around good in there... Under power on the road, it hesitates, doesn't have much power.
Open the hood, look around, the fuel pressure regulator is pissing out fuel, it's all wet on top, underneath, dripping. Would this little fuel regulator cause the problem? It's at the end of the fuel injector rail, with one vaccuum hose traveling to the intake section. Thoughts? And by the way, I tried to remove the damn thing and it's not pretty. ;-) |

Re: 96 Sunfire GT Idle / Power Problem - Question...
The fuel pressure regulator is bad and needs to be replaced. The diaphram in the regulator has ruptured and is not providing proper pressure to the injectors resulting in poor performance and the leaking fuel is a serious fire hazard that may result in the loss of you vehicle. Get it replaced ASAP!
If you want to replace it yourself, bleed the fuel system, remove the fuel line from the regulator and the vacuum hose. Remove the retaining screw from the regulator and then gently pull it from the fuel rail. Replace in reverse order (make sure you use a new O-ring on the regulator) and start the vehicle. Getting to the thing is the worst part of the job! Good Luck!

Re: 96 Sunfire GT Idle / Power Problem - Question...
The next place to look is the integrated ignition system. They are known for going bad. Remove the center cover and look at the coil and boots. You may need to replace both. You may also need to change the ignition module. Everything is located under the center cover of the engine.
