300ZX brake upgrade...
Hey guys. Just wondering, am I gonna need the 300ZX rotors along with the calipers in order to do the 300ZX front brake upgrade? I might prder calipers, but I am not sure if I need rotors or not. Let me know. Thanks.

Re: 300ZX brake upgrade...
Yeah, the Z caliper's are bigger than stock 240 so I don't think the stock 240 rotors will work.

Re: 300ZX brake upgrade...
actually i think the stock discs will work.. all the brake upgrade does is increase the friction area really.. the 4 pistons do help with psi but unless you're doing autox then it wont really matter.. bigger discs would make a difference but you wouldn't really notice it on the street.. braking will be more efficient with larger discs so its your call if you want to spend the money or not.
and if you're keeping the stock rims then you'll need spacers cause the calipers won't clear the rims

Re: 300ZX brake upgrade...
I guess I stand corrected then....Looking at the pictures here http://importnut.net/300zxbrakeswap.htm I thought the z rotors were thicker, but i guess even if they are it should be able to accomodate the stock rotors.

Re: 300ZX brake upgrade...
anything 5-lug and has enough clearance for your new calipers....

Re: 300ZX brake upgrade...
i'm not sure what size discs those calipers fit on but i'm confident its not just 11.6"..

since i got a Z brake conversion done to my car along with like 3 other people i know i'll chime in. the stock Z calipers comes in two different widths. the 89-92 i believe came with 26mm thick rotors, and from 93-96 they came in 30mm thickness to solve a warping problem. since there are two different rotor thickness there are also two different caliper designs. although they look identical they're different calipers and the rotors can't be interchangable with one or nother i believe.
anyways a stock S14 rotor is 10 inches in the front. i would except the S13 to be that of a similar size. the Z rotors are 11 inches in diameter and much thicker. also i've never heard of anyone doing a brake conversion without changing the rotors. just change the rotors. i know the Z brakes hardly clears the stock 16x6.5 5 lug SE wheels. but i'm not sure if it will clear the 4 lug S13 wheels. all of my friends who did the brake swap own S14's. and at the meets the only ones swapped S13's i see have aftermarket rims. but anything with a 40mm offset should clear it. also another thing to consider, i've swapped my brakes without swapping hte Z master cylinder and i couldn't lock up the fronts at all, and only my rears were applying so my braking got worse. its different for everyone. i've driven one htat braked fine without the swap. so i would try to see how it stops or wears first ( if theres a problem the rear pads will rear out much faster then the fronts ) and the pedal would be very spongy. thats when i would recommend swapping out hte stock MC to the Z MC.

Re: 300ZX brake upgrade...
very true, logical idea. and the s13 4 lug rims like on mine need a spacer with the z brakes. i have a spacer and it just barely fits. i'm not sure what kind of offset would clear them without a spacer but its probably close to 40 like you said

Re: 300ZX brake upgrade...
do you guys have z brakes all the way around or just up front? Im under the impression that the stock rear calipers and rotors are plenty fine....just the front should really be upgraded? I mean sure new rears are always good but is it necessarily needed? I guess it would depend on what you use the car for. auto-x may need a full brake upgrade.

Re: 300ZX brake upgrade...
yeah unless you really need serious stopping power then the stockers are fine. i only have them on the front and i've never had any problems with them. the next brake upgrade i'm gonna do is get the z master cylinder and steel lines. that way i would have nothing to worry about if it came to breaking lines and shit.. and i may buy new discs soon cause the current ones are getting thin..
another thing.. what do you guys think of drilled and/or slotted rotors?? i don't think i'd ever buy them cause it really wouldn't make a difference since i drive my car daily and don't autox or anything..

Re: 300ZX brake upgrade...
ok, I have an S13, and all I wanna know is what do I need, other than the calipers and rotors to do the swap? I tried to find the answer in the FAQ's, but couldn't seem to find a clear answer.

Re: 300ZX brake upgrade...
I've heard that x-drilled rotors warp more easily then slotted.

Re: 300ZX brake upgrade...
I have done my research and I believe that in order to complete the ZX brake conversion on my S14 and probably the same as the S13, you will need calipers, rotors, the hybrid type brake lines which are made for the swap (Many aftermarket companies make these. Try www.PDM-Racing.com), and also if you want better braking all around, the Z32 Master cylinder. I am pretty sure that is it, but don't quote me on it. As far as rotors go, I am going to buy slotted only because I have read that drilled rotors crack more easily and when the brakes are pushed, air and gases get caught inside the holes between the pads and give you an unsecure squishy pedal. I do not know from experience, but just to be safe, I am going with slotted only.
