un-$ucking real

so, right, i needed to replace my cam chain in my 97 elantra becasue it was running really loud and i needed a good running car when i take apart my eclipe for my 6bolt stroker install. so i bought the chain, valve gasket and oil seals from the parts department at my work, went back to the shop and made some photocopies of the work, no big deal.

got everything in now problem. about an hour. Put the chain on, replaced the oil seals, and valve cover gasket. and FORGOT TO BLEED THE LIFTERS..

towed the car into my shop at work. Bent every intake valve, and cracked all the guides causing the head to warp. DING DING. Need new head! so i'm ordering one online, with the head, laber and parts it will cost me $500-600.

i guess my project gets set back another month. GOD DAMNIT!!

unfucking believable.

nothing like owning a hyundai & an eclipse to eat the lint right out of my pocket.

Man, you have no idea how bad I feel for you. Seriously, why does that shit happen to the good people in this world?? Why doesn't it happen to the assholes out there? You just go about trying to do a simple deal and shit happens.

Man, I hope it all works out, I feel so bad for you.

Peace.

Re: un-$ucking real

I found a solution to the lifter bleeding problem. Take a couple weeks to get the work done. They bleed down on their own in that time But that sucks for sure. Its never happened to me yet, but its not uncommon.

Edit> And this is why it took me 5 years to run low 11s. Bullshit like this happening constantly. Not only does it set you back in time for the actua work you need to do, but also money, which it takes time to earn, and time to get parts in, etc. What a pain in the ass.

What is bleeding the lifters? I know what the lifters are...just not sure what the bleeding process involves.

Re: un-$ucking real

They can still be pumped up from the last time oil pressure was applied to them. When you reinstall things the lifter that was pumped up before can now be under a cam lobe that is pointing down, or trying to open the valve. The extended lifter now pushes the valve too far down and shit makes contact. There is a procedure for bleeding the oil out of them by sticking a paper clip in a hole, I forget if its the bottom hole or the side, I think its the bottom. At any rate, I tend to let the motor sit while I'm working on it, mostly because I tend to take weeks to get things done these days, and I also rotate the motor many times after setting up the tbelt, so if there is any contact I can (hopefully) feel it before its too late. My lifters are also all but completely bollixed, so that may keep them from being able to retain enough oil pressure to keep them extended. And this is another reason it pays to take apart the motor at TDC on number 1, so when it goes together all the cam lobes and lifter lenghts still match up.

Re: un-$ucking real

i orderd the complete head from some shop in Road Island. i sent a ups pick up tag from work, it should be here in a little over a week. it looks like the Head was only $75. still, after $50 ground shipping, $133 head gasket set, and $175. soi might be able to squeeze dsmlink in this month after all. who knows.

Re: un-$ucking real

i just replaced my lifters on my 1.8 and i just set the lifters in a jar of oil for a couple days and then put them right in there. that takes care of the bleeding and everything. good luck to anyone else changing them.
