Re: better engine

Well, I think you may want to try a more unbiased forum for that discussion.

I never had a diesel but the reputation around here (Indiana) is duramax out performs and is quieter. But then again I have never hooked up a duramax generator, while I have hooked up plenty of Cummins and Catapillers (I'm an electrician..These generators are big, from V8 to V16). So who knows? I'm sure you can get better answers than mine from other people here.

Re: better engine

Duramax comes from factory with more power than a cummins or powerstroke, that is a fact. However as far as tuning potential goes, cummines diesel engines have the potential to make way more power than a duramax ever could. that is the reason why cummins are more popular, the numbers stock are close to a duramax but $1000 spent on a cummins will get you twice as much power as the same $1000 spent on a duramax. I would never buy a cummins that is in a dodge however, awesome engine wrapped in shit. As far as i know cummins is now an independant company and is in no way "in cahoots" with dodge, or maybe thats just truck show rumor. Best engine if you plan to keep it bone stock, duramax. Best engine to get the most power out of, cummins.

I had a cummins diesel truck beat me in the 1/4 last weekend at the track. The truck went 12.34, and it weighted around 7000lbs. He showed me the dyno on it and it made 730hp and 13??ft lbs torque!!!!!! That thing was truly a beast! It had big stacks stuck out of the bed and traction bars.

Both duramaxs I ran went 13.5, so I had no trouble with them. They are all great motors, but overall power making, I'd say the cummins is at the top right now. They seem to be putting out the big hp/tq numbers.

Re: better engine

I like the Power Stroke myself.....and the Cummins...I'm not fond of the Duramax at all.

Re: better engine

As far as diesel goes, I prefer Caterpillar. But between Duramax and Cummins I'd still have to go with Duramax being it is part of GM powertrain. Cummins diesel engines are very solid and reliable though but those Duramax are pretty tough to.

Re: better engine

yes i too agree that caterpillar diesel are prolly the best all around diesel engine. i have heard rumor of thoses engine being available soon in light duty trucks. But if i were to have a diesel it would be a new cummins bolted to and allison tranny under the hood of a 96-97 k-3500.

Ok, I agree with the Cummins and Allison tranny, but I'd put it in an '02 2500HD ext cab WITH a solid axle front end. I don't trust the IFS to hold the weight of the diesel plus the replacement bumper I want.
What I really want to do though, is put a Duramax in a 3/4 Suburban 4x4.
Jeb

-- oh yeah, of the two pumpers at my station, one's a Cat and the other's a Detroit diesel. The Detroit makes more hps, but the Cat is indestructable. During Hurricane Allison we ran the Cat submerged until the cooling fan finally gave out and disentegrated from pushing water.

Re: better engine

being a deisel mechanic for 20 years, i can tell you know that the cummins is aa far better engine than the duramax or the power stroke. all the large deisel engine manufactures have tried V8 deisels in the past and have abandom them. series 60, cat and cummins are all inline 6 cylinders producing high horse power and torque that V8's cannot. and the reliability of the inline 6 is rock solid and much easier to work on. the power stroke and the duramax are want a bee diesels that will cost you a lot of money in the long run.
