power inverter cable?

Hi i am having a problem with installing a power inverter in my car i am trying to run an xbox and 5 inch lcd off a dual plug 400watt huski power inverter. when using the cigarrete adapter the invert doesnt have enough power to turn on the xbox by it self . so i tried the direct battery hook up and it works fine but the problem iam having is that when i try to extend the cables ( because the cable is only 1 foot long) i dont get enough power to keep the xbox and tv running at the same time. the lcd monitor runs off 7.5v so its not like its drawing that much power. i am probably using the wrong type of wires to extend with i think its 20 gauge speaker wire i am only extending the jumper wire like 6 feet so i dont see how i lose so much power.

what type of wire should i be using to extend the direct battery hook up?

Re: power inverter cable?

to run both, you will need a bigger power inverter. or you can try on of those capasitors. hell you could even setup another battery in the trunk. alot of people with car entertainment do that

what kind of capaciter would i be looking for and where would i be putting it? i dont understand why i would need a bigger inverter because even on the box it shows a blender and a decent size tv plugged in and everything works fine. i can get both my lcd and my xbox to run when its directly hooked up. i start having problems when i extend the original cable with other wires.

Re: power inverter cable?

maybe get a higher gauge wire?

so...you said that it works fine with directly connected to the battery. does that mean directly to the car battery? or does that mean directly to the power inverter?

and dont always go by the pictures on the box

directly to the battery i only get this problem when i try to extend the supplied cable. i would put the inverter under the hood but iam afraid it will get wet.

Re: power inverter cable?

ok im still a little confused....so when you connect the inverter directly to the battery then connect the tv and xbox to the inverter, it works fine? are you trying to extend the supplied cable for the inverter or the supplied cables for the xbox and tv?

and when you try plugging the inverter into the cigarette lighter, it doesnt have enough power to power up the xbox and tv?

i am trying to extend the power inverter cable and no when the cig adapter was plugged in it didnt even have enough power to start the xbox. i also found out that the xbox only uses 120watts so that leaves 280 for the lcd which definatley doesnt use that much wattage. i think the problem is iam using speaker wire which someone told me might only beable to run like 40watts

Re: power inverter cable?

check to make sure the cigarette lighter works. that seems to be alot of power trying to come out of the cigarette lighter. maybe you blew a fuse?

i would try a high guage wire for extending the wires

this is what i would do...get another car battery, mount it in the trunk, and connect everything to it.

thanks for the help i ended up mounting the inverter under the hood and ran these small extenstion cables to the rear of my car every works fine now.

do you know much about lcd's?

if so when my lcd turns on it kinda pulses at the top of the screen kind of light to dark just pulsing?

i tried turning the neigne on to make sure enough power was being made and it didnt make a difference. its probably just a bad connection on the lcd video wires.

would the cold effect the lcd monitor?
