Squeaky %$@& Belt!!

Ok, when I took my alternator out to replace the voltage regulator, I was 110% sure that everything went back the way it was supposed to be and everything lined up perfectly. But now, the belt that runs the alternator squeals like a stuck bastich pig. Now, it only squeals at idle speed, when I gun her up to 3k, it quiets out and runs right, even at idle. But when I put the gas on it again, it starts to squeal. I suppose its the randomness of it thats pissin me off . What do y'all think it may be? The belt looks good, but I'm really no judge, maybe it needs replaced? Is there some kind of belt lubricant? Lemme know please.

Re: Squeaky %$@& Belt!!

I have used wd40 or other spray lubricants on small squeaks but never had anything like your talking about. Did it start making the sound as soon as you installed the new alternator?. Maybe you have too much tension on the belt.

Yes they can have too much tension but do you have a tensioner pulley or a adjustment bracket?

And thanks about the sig.

it squeals when there is not enough tension, the squealing comes from a slipping belt...

Re: Squeaky %$@& Belt!!

If adjusting your tension on the belt doesn't help, there is a product available at most auto parts retailers called "belt dressing" which is like a sticky fluid that you spray on the belt to give it more traction on the pulleys. It eliminates the squeaks and is supposed to add to the belt life. You can get it for about three bucks a can.

Re: Squeaky %$@& Belt!!

More tension was the answer. Got a pry bar out and used it as leverage, and was able to pull the alt back almost another inch. No more squeakies makes Jim a happy boy.
