1998 grand am gt coupe - Converting manual windows to power windows

I want to convert my manual windows to power windows. A friend of mine said he could do it, but only if there is no computer chip. Is there

a. a way to find out if i have a computer chip since he said he used to do it with old cars that had no computer chips.

or

b. another way to go about converting the windows.

-Thank you for your time and help.

You should be able to buy an aftermarket kit that will not tie into the computer system at all. There should be something available that uses its own power source that would make it no different than adding any other type of accessory (IE: fog lights). A seperate power source will only control the windows, if you use factory switches you may have to experiment with them until you find out which connection location on the switch controls the up and down movement.

Hope it works out for you, Let me know if it does, I have a 96 Grand Am GT and wouldn't mind putting in power windows.

Yeah, a comp. chip is not needed. J.C. Whitney has several universal power kits that work, they just tap straight power off battery, [although there is a little more to it than that].

Reminder, you have to mount a motor system in each door, fuss it to the existing window riser channels and the manual crank. Then wire up a switch.

That can be done two ways, either get some boneyard panels having power window switches in them or drill a hole in original panel to mount the kit's switch.
