oil pan gasket

If anybody has specs ,instructions,and can tell me how long and how hard it will be to change out the oil pan gasket on a 94 cherokee 2 door sport,it would be very helpful.Also wondering what kind of tools will i need and do i have to jack the engine up or use any jack stands.Thanks for your guys help,much appreciated!!! p.s. Torque specs and tightening sequence would be helpful.

you shouldent have to jack up the motor its easy to replace just make sure you clean off the old gasket real good. check the haynes manuel for the bolts specs.

My 2 cents...

1 - make sure to clean the bottom the the block before you go putting the pan back on, dont want to get any crap in there.

2 - Use some sewing string, and attach the new gasket to the pan, by tie'in through the bolt holes.This will help with the alignment of the gasket as you goto put the pan back on.

3 - If the string does work for you, cause I am sure you hands will be covered in crap, I found that inserting the bolts into the part of the pan that is closest to the bell housing, and pushing the gasket down over the bolts, tends to hold the gasket in place as you push the pan up and back into place.

Also..

I found that 6-sided socket set works the best. I had to use 10mm, 12mm, and 13mm for mine (If I recall correctly).

Also, you will definately need at least like an 8 inch extension for your socket set.

When you are putting all the bolts back in place, just get a few threads started on each one. This will make it a lot easier to get all the bolts in.

As far as a tightening pattern, I usually start at the bell housing end, and tightern one bolt on each side, going from the left side to the right side. I dont know the torque specs, but I am guessing its not that high. I just used my best judgment (after I broke a few), an am pretty good at it now.

Been awhile since I did a pan gasket. But when I did, we used dental floss. Knot tied in one end, small scissors to cut the loop, pulled right out. Only had to put dental floss in a few holes so it wasn't a big deal.

Actually, I dabbed a bit of silicone seal around the bolt holes in the gasket. So I "glued" the gasket to the pan and that held it all in place. A few more dabs at the joints in the 3 piece seal did the trick.
