Could someone please help me trouble shoot my fuel problem on a 91 chev pickup?

I don't know everything about engines but know more then most girls and many fellows as well. I am more used to older vehicles but this truck has fuel injection. A few weeks ago, it was lugging at cruising speed so a mechanic changed points, plugs filters and reset the "fuel sending sensor"??. It did not help until I asked him to change the plug wires, as I suspected, it fixed the problem. Now, the last 4 days. When i start the truck, it idles a tiny bit rought, but when i get in to drive it, give it gas, It chugs and sputters and nearly dies right out. The "Check engine" light is on and it will not run over 10kms for the fist 5-8 mins. It pops and even backfired a bit today. After a few miles it will let me ease up carefully to abut 40 kms. still stuttering, then when it is warmed up it cruises along nicely. It does idle very fast and i can go about 60 kms without touching the gas pedal. Could anyone give me some insight before I take it in again. I can't afford anymore trouble shooting by trial and error. Thanks in advance for any help.

have Auto Zone do a scan to see why the check engine light is on.......hopefully that will narrow down the problem, I dont understand resetting the fuel sensor, if that was the original problem, shouldnt it have been replaced?

It sounds like either the one of the plug wires are grounding out, or the points are set incorrectly. check the timing , if it is correct then it is probably one of these two problems since he just changed them.

youre right you dont know much about engines, a 91 doesnt have points. also to run a computer check, you can do this yourself. take a paper clip and with the key off ground terminal a to b in the plug for the computer diagnostic link. then turn key to the ON position, (just on dont start it yet). when you do this it will flash the check engine light once with a pause then twice with a loger pause then it will repeat this twice more, if there is no problems it will keep repeating the 12 code. each trouble code will repeat itself three times before going on to the next code, right these down then diconect the jumper wire from the diagnostic connector, turn key off and disconect battery to clear all codes.

you all shouldn't talk bad about someones lack of knowledge, alot of people don't full understand the electronic systems in the automotive world yet

you could have the codes read by the auto parts store or do it yourself, but i would first start with what agent said to do, anytime you work on something and it causes a problem the first thing that should always be done is retrace your work

in your case make sure the plug wires are in the right place, make sure they are snapped fully into place, and make sure that the plug gap is correct
