Post Hyundai dealers charge too much!

Is it me or is this just my imagination...

I go to the Hyundai dealer for the recall they had on the '00 Tibs & Elantra's for the crack in the exhaust manifold. Mine had to be replaced! Yaaay! I have a brand new manifold So...I have 70k miles on my Tib and they suggest that I have the 60k mile checkup/maintenance done on my Tib. Guess how much they were wanting....JUST FOR THE 60k maintenance/checkup. ....anyone?

$700 *excluding taxes

I don't understand that....so then I had them look at something else. Like my synchro's on 3rd gear are off. It makes my damn manual tranny come out of gear when I'm driving in 3rd gear sometimes. It's rather very aggrivating. I was told I need a new tie rod on my rear left tire area...and a few other things needed repaired or replaced. That was another $1400 which I can clearly understand. But for the 60k mile maintenance/checkup they wanted $700 for. WHAT THE H*LL? Is this just the Hyundai dealer I go to that charges this much or can someone else PLEASE confirm this is what you would get charged at your local Hyundai dealer? I think that is just anal rape and it's over charging customers. What kind of crap is that anyway?

I Just took my 03 in for the 60k mile checkup...(i drive to much) and they quoted me almost exactly what you did, and i live in texas incase it has to do with anything on the car for regional inspections. I made the guy spell it out for me and its something like this. 350 or so of that is tranny flush and filter swap, oil change and filter, spark plugs-wires things like that, and a few other little things. I think the bulk of that is that they have to either pull the engine or take a bunch of stuff off of my engine to get to the back 3 plugs on the V6 that i have. Then for my car it was another 250-290 for a timing belt that they said was covered under warrenty only for 60k miles, after that if it broke and you hadn't had it fixed then the engine damage isn't under warranty, so its just a price to pay to keep the engine warranty. The rest of the cost is tax plus time and labor i guess. Hope that helps.

I already have new spark plugs put in and wires...yes. Thanks for the input guys - I just thought I was the only guy getting ripped off. It's still rediculous on how much they charge. My car is out of warranty & unfortunately I have to pay for that stuff. My timing belt needs replaced too. Actually all of the belts do. I just don't have $1400 plus another $700 for the 60k mile checkup they wanted to do.

Re: Hyundai dealers charge too much!

well, the problem with the timing belt is they damn near half to take everything out to replace it... so it get's costly. you may not need to replace it at 60k... but i'd check with a 2nd party... NEVER go to a dealer out of warranty to do work, they will charge you alot.

You also have to look at what kind of parts you are putting on the car, and the knowledge of the tech thats doing the work. Yes, a dealer is going to be more expensive than an aftermarket repair shop. But look who's doing the work. Somebody that has a ton of training by Hyundai, and one who knows more about Hyundai than anybody would at any other shop. You are also getting Hyundai parts when they do the work as well. We get cars in here all the time that are messed up from other mechanics doing work that they don't know how to do. For example, as you probably already know, Hyundai's take their own transmission fluid. Not Dextron III, ATF+4, or Type-F. We have a Sante Fe in here right now getting a transmission put in it because the shop they took it to put the wrong fluid in when they did the service. Changing a timing belt on most Hyundai's require a special tool to keep the camshafts aligned and to keep them in time with the rest of the engine. You cannot buy these tools from Sears, Snap-On, Mac Tools, or Matco. We have also done some motors where a timing belt was done and one of the cams was one tooth off. Guess what, bent valves, or a broken motor. Yes, I consider it quite expensive, but you know the old saying, you get what you pay for. $700 is about right for a 60k mile service. At our dealership, a 60k consistes of oil change, air filter, pcv valve, fuel filter, spark plugs, (yes on the V6, you have to take the upper intake plenum off to get to the back plugs, and will have to replace the intake gasket as well), timing belt (most of the Hyundai engines now have a Hydraulic timing tensioner, which 95% of the time goes bad once it goes to full extension when the belt is off, so we replace it every time), a 3 part fuel induction cleaning (1 in the tank, 1 ported directly into the intake manifold, and 1 directly into the throttle body), a coolant flush, a transmission flush, and a rotate and balance. Plus, top off all other fluids, and the full inspection of brakes, belts, etc. Yes it is expensive, but it is worth it, so keep that in mind.

Fine...then I tell you what since all Hyundai dealers think money grows out of human's ears....GIVE ME A FLOATER LOAN AND PAY FOR MY REPAIRS, B/C I DON'T HAVE THE $$$ TO DO IT MYSELF. So much for foreign cars. I think I'll just get rid of my tib since it's junk now and just walk everywhere i go.

Next time I complain about the prices of a service check, someone please slap me. Damn. and I thought NYC was expensive but 700 US dollars for a 60K.Yikes. Shoot my dealership only charges 515.95 and I thought that was alot. It looks more like a bargain now. Damn I feel your pain.

Nah...it shouldn't - I am not so sure Hyundai replaced or put new synchro's in my Tib last June. Certainly can't be new if they're ruined again already!?

TS - Yep, think I'll move to NYC that does sound like a bargain!
