Question transmissions compatability

my tranny went out today, I need to know which trannys from what kind/year of car would fit my 92 olds cutlass supreme 3.4, and if a 88 Corsica tranny would fit in my car?

Re: transmissions compatability

I don't know the finer points of this, but I'll spit out what I do know to get you started. The 2.8, 3.1, and 3.4 share bolt patterns, so the trannys will physically bolt up. I'm assuming its an auto tranny...

There are finer points to be discussed. One member observed with his swap that the torque converters carried different part numbers and stall speeds given the different final drive ratio between cars. You should investigate that further to prevent a converter that is too tight or too loose preventing optimal operation.

The other thing he noticed was that the electrical connections were different. One had a square, four-prong connector and the other had a round four-prong. Upon further investigation, he discovered that it was not just as easy as adapting the plugs, the wires controlled potentially different things.

I would say from his experience (unfortunately I can't give you first hand info) that the answer is; physically, yes. It will share external dimensions and bolts. Mechanically, hydraulically, and electronically, I can't say.
