Windshield Wiper problems

The driver side wiper on my '97 Grand Prix has gone all Linda Blair on me. If there is something heavy (like snow) on the windshield it won't lift completely and the passanger side wiper runs into it. Other times it will act like it's working OK, but it will get stuck on its return cycle, then on the next up cycle it pushes itself off the windshield and lodges on the driver side mirror (if that makes sense). Any help would be appreciated.

OK guys help me out. Got a "mind fart" going. What's the name of the part that the wiper arm hooks to? Because it sounds like one of his is gone.

Re: Windshield Wiper problems

Sounds like the wiper transmission assembly is failing.

There is a recall for wiper's on 97's

~Larry~

1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GT
Recall Notice

Campaign Number: 99V348000 Date: 1999-Dec-09

Component: Visual Systems: Windshield Wiper Linkage: Pivot: Drive Assembly

Defect Summary: Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. The windshield wipers may stop working due to a separation between the drive pin and crescent in the crank arm assembly.

Consequence Summary: Driver visibility could be reduced, increasing the risk of a crash.

Corrective Summary: Dealers will inspect these vehicles for the presence of a plastic water deflector and, if necessary, replace the wiper motor crank arm and install a water deflector. On vehicles receiving a replacement crank arm and new water deflector, dealers will also apply additional sealing material to improve water deflection away from the crank arm assembly and will install a reinforcement to improve the performance of the wiper park mechanism.

Larry,
When that goes, doesn't it flop and stay? Doesn't stop and start working? I know your not going to beleive this, could I be wrong?

We have a '97 GTP and the driver side windshield wiper started working erratically. I tightened (really tight) the nut holding the wiper to the actuator. It's worked fine ever since.
