95 grand am problems

I am having problems with my 95 Grand Am- it has 133,000 miles on it first of all. It runs fine with the exception that since sunday it acts as if it wont catch when driving and sometimes slows down, sputters, jerks and is just plain scary. I have heard a few people say I should check the torque converter, and others say the fuel pump is going out. I just had my oxygen sensor taken out and a new one put in not too long ago so i know it cant be that. I also have a newer fuel filter and stuff like that.

My boyfriend will be taking it in to school to look at it (hes in the automotive program) and i wanted to give him some ideas on things to look at- does anyone have any suggestions? Or has anyone experienced those problems before?

Re: 95 grand am problems

yeah, sounds like fuel pump. Could also be the IAC or TPS or possibly the MAF sensor.

With luck, it could just be clogging injectors or dirty throttle body air intake.

I suggest ya run a diagnostic first, see if the car's comp. shows any codes, that will help the b/f target the problem if it a sensor.

Re: 95 grand am problems

I just had the same problem with my 95, It has 115,00 miles and was doing the same thing I tried the same things you are trying and none worked. to fix it you need to get a coil pack.

Re: Re: 95 grand am problems

Just to add a little more I did the diagnostics test on mine and nothing showed up. I tried getting new spark plugs, spark plug boots, O2 sensor, fuel filter, Fuel injector cleaner, dry gas, and nothing worked so I called a junk yard and found a coil pack. It was easier that way to buy it with a new cover and all. It was actually cheaper too. When I put it on after I drove it for about 5 min. she was running like new again. I really believe you are having the same problem I had even though some will say its rare for the coil pack to go. The junk yard even tried to tell me I was wrong and shouldnt buy it! Well Good Luck!!
