95 ex single cam vtec or swap?

my cuz just got a 95 ex vtec its got the single cam but it has a bit of work done to it allready these are the mods so far

cold air intake
dc 4-1 header
apex-i world sport exhaust
no cat
stage 2 crower cam
aem camgear
stage 2 port & polished head
act stage 2 clutch
lightened 12 lb flywheel
mugen reprogrammed ecu
vafc 2

pulls pretty damn hard should he just finish buildin it like doin the bottom end and everything or should he just swap to another engine?

Re: 95 ex single cam vtec or swap?

You've been here long enough to know better...
How much more power is he looking for? If he's not looking for a lot more of a gain, then yes building the engine would be good. But if he's looking for 30+ more hp, then a swap of turbo would be best. Find out what he's looking for and everyone should be bale to help you better.

Re: 95 ex single cam vtec or swap?

If he wants to get into 12's he'll need to get rid of some of the stuff he's got: exhaust, header, and ecu (and vafc if he gets a good engine management, which he should). And turbo is the only way to go as well, no way he'd hit 12's by going all motor. He should build the entire short block with strong internals to support quite bit of boost. Personally I'd also get rid of the cam and get a crower turbo cam instead, as well as the entire valvetrain. It can definently be done, there are quite a few people pushing 400+whp out of those little SOHC engines. However it will be easier to get hp out of a DOHC engine (even just an LS), but would be more expensive in the long run. So; build the block, killer engine management, and a really good tune will do it. It ain't gonna be cheap.

if he wnats to run high 12s then probably around 330whp or so should get him into the high 12s. that would need a full build, dont need to sleeve though but then again boost is addictive so he might want the extra protection for later

ok got a few more questions

a friend of mine has a 97 ex civic with the d16y8 motor these are his mods as of now

intake,4-2-1 dc header/no cat/apex i worldsport 2 exhaust
stage 2 zex camshaft/ aem cam gear 2 degree advanced
obd1 p28 chipped ecu vtec engages at 6k

wat other things can he do to make his car more powerfull like what are some good tricks and treats to add to the car?

how good do u think his car will do if he went ahead and built it for all motor

like did the valve's/springs/retainers/ported the head
vafc controller
fuel rail/injectors/intake manifold
high comp pistons/rings/rods

any ideas after a good tuning session what a d16y8 would be able to push out?

no money for swap

Knock like 80 WHP off that and now you're talking for high 12's.

I don't know about that man. 250whp isn't a whole lot for a fwd Civic. You'd need more than that to get into 12's.

Re: 95 ex single cam vtec or swap?

the sohc vtec isnt really ideal for all motor, i mean its good out of all the d series but its not gonna match up to an all motor b series. i would say streetable would be like 170whp. so it would probably put him in the high 13s.

im talking 330whp boosted, not 300whp all motor. the d series doesnt have the tq to pull it through with that little bit whp. he will need more tq which will probably put him at like 330whp

can single cams handle boost well? or do they need to be built in order to go turbo on them say at 8 psi?
