98 contour SE auto transmission problem?

Hi, when pressing on the gas the car will give a hard kick somtimes, it also dose this if i let my foot off the gass when comming to a stop. secondly when i want to accelerate from stoping at a light, the car will stutter at a low speed as if somthing is not catching it dose this for about 5-10 seconds. Any help/advice is appreciated Thanks!

when was the last time the fuel filter was replaced?

i have no idea becuase i just got the car. the car can go a day without the problem but i did notice a diffrence when i used higher quaility gas, the problem did ease a bit.

does the problem usually occur upon a cold start up and go away once the car has been driven awhile?

its random, somtimes when the car has been running for a while it will start to stutter. upon start up the cold it might jerk but today everything was smooth so i dunno

I think I would replace the fuel filter. Its a cheap fix and literally takes 2 seconds to replace. Its located underneath the car, in front of the passenger side rear tire. You can buy the replacement parts at NAPA or probably any auto parts store for about $20.

Hey, did anyone ever find out what was causing that problem with this 1998 Contour? I see the last post was in March. I am having the exact same problem with my 98 Contour SE. By chance the water pump had to be replaced, but still having that bucking / shudder thing every now and then.

I had a rain (rane?) sensor replaced ina 98 contour. The symptoms were hard shifting, with a lurch, slow take off from a stop. Also had a little trans fluid puke out the breather tube up by the battery. Mechanic did the fix, said the trans didn't know what gear it was in. Wasn't cheap but sure beat a rebuild.
