transmission problem

I just put a new 3100 motor in my 96 but when I took it for a ride, the car had no power. It seems as if it was not in first gear. I manually put it from drive to 2nd and it had more power and shifted. The fluid level is good and I didnt see anything unplugged. Is there anything I can try before I give up?
