Im thinking of Buying a 1885 300d, I was wondering how cold it has to get for the engiens to start giving problems starting up. I live in New Jersey, in the winter it gets to 10s and 20s in the moring.

Re: Weather

At 10 degrees you may want to invest in a block heater. In any event if it's that cold out be sure to glow the engine about 30 seconds AFTER the light goes out.

Re: Weather

Not really. If it has been taken care of the engine should start fine but there is a method of starting a older MB diesel in very cold weather. Glow for at least a minute or 75 seconds. Crank the engine and do not stop cranking until the engine starts. When it starts...keep cranking on the starter (do not stop turning the engine over) with your foot on the accelerator until your confident the engine will run on its own. When the diesel hits the cold cylinders it will kill a freshly started engine and you will not get it started anytime soon, thats why you keep on the starter until the cylinders get a little warm.

Re: Weather

Do As Talonlover Says. It Will Start. Also Make Sure You Put A Antigell In Your Fuel. Gelling Is No Fun. You Can Get It At Any Truck Stop Or Auto Parts Store. I Double Up On The Amount One Quart Treats 500 Gallons Of Fuel A Little More Cant Hurt

Re: Weather

also might be good to have the valve lash checked. An engine in good condition with the valves set correctly shouldn't need to be plugged in.

Also you can go with a lighter weight oil, 5w-30 or such. This should all ease cold starts for it.
