Re: 85 crx air intake

I'm not sure on the instead of carb part....but if you were to take an intake from a 2nd gen and just bypass the second piping part and just put the filter on the first half instead. Thats what i did on my 86 si. Hope that helps...

Re: 85 crx air intake

It's entirely possible to put a CAI on a carbed motor. Even my mom's 'ol '53 Buick has two! Just don't remove the carb.

All you need to do is construct a duct that starts near the inner fender or under the car and continues to your carb. You will need to construct some sort of shroud around the carb in order to attach the duct, then put a filter on the other end and you're ready to go!

If you can weld or know someone who can, the whole thing could be made from exhaust tubing and sheet metal.

You could also construct a "ram air" intake which would actually be more beneficial. This would require a hood scoop (it can be small), and again some welding skill. All you would need is a small aftermarket air filter, a hole in the hood, a hood scoop to cover the hole and direct air into the carb, a custom pan under the air filter and a gasket to seal the pan to the hole in the hood. The benefit of this method is that not only does it draw in cold air which is more dense than warm air, but it also increases air pressure as you accelerate (kinda' like a turbo, but with less PSI and of course, no turbo).

More dense air = more HP!

Hmmm...
Hope it doesn't rain much where you're at!

Normally I wouldn't suggest putting a hood scoop on ANY car, but if if serves a purpouse then go for it! However, be prepared to be ridiculed by all your friends, and most everyone else.

And...
If you meant putting fuel injection on your motor instead of a carb, well...
That's a whole different can of worms.

Re: 85 crx air intake

i have a '85 carbed crx too, and was trying to add the cold-air intake but was wondering how to do it with the PCV filter, that hose that goes to the header, and that air control diaphram thingy on the air cleaner housing (big black round thing)

all u have to do is block that pipe because all it does is take the exhaust heat and put it into the air intake which is kinda bad cuz ur puttin the hot air into the motor. now for the pcv valve all that does is take any oil bypass and puts it into the motor which is a hp loss. all u do is put a small filter on the end near the valve cover and ur fine on that. but it is illigal to undo the pcv beacause it will make ur motor produce more emissions. but as long as ur smart about ur shyt ur safe. now they do make a legal oil bypass that doesn't hurt ur motor and i think nopi has it for like 60 to 100 buck but if money is scarce then id go for the filter. good luck with that.

Re: 85 crx air intake

thanks. i'll have to try something "custom" i guess, but if you had some pics it'd be great. and what exactly do you mean by blocking that one pipe?
