New Engine Smokin !!!!!!!

Hi all,,,

I have just fitted a new engine in my vauxhall frontera,, the car has run great with no problems for a couple of weeks,, however the other night i floored the car and after a few seconds saw large plumes of grey smoke pouring from the exhaust,,,,,,
Left the car overnight and started it in the morning,,, this thick grey smoke bellows from the exhaust straight away,,, it's been suggested that the valve seals may have gone,, but there is no evidence of any oil being burnt,, levels, look the same ?
The engine still runs great apart from the smoke... and doesn't overheat...
any help would be appreciated

Re: New Engine Smokin !!!!!!!

Ok here is advice you need to memorize!!!

1. Oil consumption upon acceleration is caused by poor piston ring seal. This is caused by the extra blow-by gas entering the crankcase and vaporizing the oil.

2. Oil consumption upon deceleration is caused by poor valve guide clearance. This occurs since when an engine declerates, there is an increase in vaccuum and this pulls oil past the valve guides.

Remember that and you'll sound...if not be smarter.

Yup, this advice is spot on.

However, fronty says there suddenly was sudenly was large plumes of grey smoke.
This tells me it is neither rings nor valve guides. Something has broken; possubly a cracked/holed piston, cracked head/cylinder wall or a blown head or intake manifold gasket.
If there is truly a HUGE amount of smoke its likely burning coolant, not oil.
Regardless the engine is likely pooched and the rebuilders need to give you another one under warranty.

Thanks for the replies guys,,,

Unfortunately the engine was installed by a friend of a friend,, on the cheap,,, the engine i was told had only done 17k,,,, i started the car today and there was hardly any smoke,,, decided to drive it and for about half a mile everything was fine,,, by the time i got home though there was grey smoke again with a definate tint of blue and a smell of something burning,,,,,, the car still drove perfectly though, other than the smoke there were no signs of anything being wrong ie temp, oil pressure, loss of power, metallic noises........

As for the inlet gasket being blown,, would this cause these symptoms as i know the guy used the old gasket and about 2 tubes of sealant by the looks of it?

Yep, grey is running rich. Should not be too hard to fix. Good Luck.
