88 Mr2 mods..

I'm close to buying a 88 mr2 and then a 89 mr2(havent see this one yet, but brother says it has a v6?? or maybe he meant a turbo??? or supercharged?? he said it'll go 150mph.)...well...im getting both for $1000, the 88 runs, the 89 just needs to be finished being put together...i know their worth $1000...but can you mod them to get some power out? like at least 200hp?

Re: 88 Mr2 mods..

200hp is highly possible but very cost effective. it costs approximately $3000 to get to a safe 170-175 hp so....
your brother probley said supercharged, and expect to spend a couple hundred to get them running well stock.

well...we were just going to get one of them running good...just for a driver...put a turbo on..intercooler, cams, stuff that we could...just to get a feel for the mr2..and then the other engine swap a 3gste engine in...
but being as light as it is...it shouldnt need tons of HP to go fast...right?

Re: 88 Mr2 mods..

the mk1 will get close to 150, the tranny allows it as long as you can get a good long stretch of road...

in 89 they came supercharged as an option, but it is VERY expensive to get a safe 200 hp out of a 4age (supercharged or n/a).

3sgte powered mk1 cars are a blast, but it's quite an involved swap. IMHO, worth every extra hp.

oh yes, and they are FAST.

no... 3 cyl per bank... you'd be missing one exhaust outlet.

Re: 88 Mr2 mods..

if you want straight up power without a total engine swap the way to go is to take that sc 4ag and convert it to a turbo.
now you will have to change internals and you'll have to modify but you will be looking at hp gains of over 200 and if youre really serious 330+hp is possible.
im doing this now to my mr2.

Re: 88 Mr2 mods..

if you custom built a 1.8L 7agte for an mr2 using a 20v head... you'd only be able to pull about 250hp... over 300 is stretching it a bit...

7agte?
i know it sounds crazy dan, but there are guys that claim 331hp off of a 16valve 4agze seven rib block turbo. i don't know if its a daily driver or strictly track & strip but its been claimed, i mean come on they are toyota blocks.

this site even has some MK1.5s check it out

Re: 88 Mr2 mods..

if you bump the compression and run unsafe levels of boost w/ the fuel completely leaned out... yes, it's entirely possible. and very expensive because the engine doesn't last too long.

Re: 88 Mr2 mods..

hmm... probably right, i havent seen either one in person so im going off of what is said.
you would still get alot of yank out of 200hp turbo mk1 though, huh dan, you know how that is.

i have an 85 mk1 4agte which was probably making somewhere around 180hp before i put it "under the knife".
