But Why Do They Do That? These Werent Cheap Either. The Guy At The Store Said The Better Ones Usually Dont Because They Dont Need To Be Greased Like The Cheap Ones?

Re: Tie rod Grease fittings?

you got the ones that are "greased for life" they are sealed and you don't have to worry about keeping them greased. But the ones that you grease yourself will last a lot longer as long as you maintain them.

It is judgement call.... do you want to grease them regularly? or do you want to change them more often? It's up to you. Personally I don't like changing them and having to pay for an alignment more than I have too, so I buy the ones with grease fittings.

I couldn't tell you that. All I know is that in 70000 miles I have gone through 3 sets of tie rod ends on my 2000. I had to pay for the last set because I was out of warranty. But I can bet that the "lubed for life" models don't last long either. I understand that the moogs have a lifetime warranty, and the grease fitting. On another note
tell me, are they difficult to replace, and do I need any special tools for either removal or replacement? I am mechanically capable, and the fact that I am going through these things like oil changes makes me inclined to add the tools to my tool box and do it my self.

Re: Tie rod Grease fittings?

smonaldo,

Did you ever grease your old ones?

It's not that bad of a job. Buy new sleeves too. it saves the trouble of having wrestle with old ones. measure the distance between the old ends and make the new ones the same, that will get your alignment fairly close.
You need a "pickle fork" .....that is the common name for a tie-rod end seperator and you will have to align the front end when finished.

Unfortunately, I left the maintenance of the old ones to the lube monkeys, and I am certain they did not grase dilligently. I am familiar with the pickle fork, Sears sells a complete set, reasonable. From what I remember, I could simply count the rotations when I unscrew the old end out of the sleeve, but I guess what you are recommending is a complete replacement of inner and outer ends. When you install the new ones, does the fastening nut press the post into place?

Re: Tie rod Grease fittings?

I don't know how much sears charges but I paid $10 for mine at Advance Auto.

Yes when you install the new one just tighten the nut to the recommended torqued and it will be properly pressed into place. If neccessary you can tighten just a little more if you need to, to get the pin in.

Re: Tie rod Grease fittings?

Moog is the way to go. Excellent quality, greasable and they are the #1 name in the replacement suspensio parts industry for a reason.

They make awesome parts.
