Evap system code P1457

Hi,

I have a 2000 Civic Si with 63k. Last week the CEL (MIL) light came on. My brother's handy OBD2 scanner said P1457, the evap system. I cleared the code, reset the CEL, filled the tank, and made sure the gas cap was tight. Well, after about 30 miles the light is back on with the same code. I called the local Honda dealership hoping there's a TSB about this problem, no such luck. The service guy said it's not likely to be the gas cap if the CEL light came back on so fast and I made sure the cap is tight. As a test, I put a different gas cap on and I'll see if the code comes back. I'll post any findings.

In the meantime, has anyone else run into this problem? If so, how was it corrected?

is it a leak code, or evap flow? just pull off the lines and check for build up, and if its a leak...smoke test it..

The manual says:
"The scan tool indicates Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1457: Evaporative Emission (EVAP) control system leak detected (EVAP control cansiter system)"

I haven't had a chance to investigate the problem beyond fiddling with the gas cap. The weather has just been too lousy. I have the manual and plan to try to fix it soon.

Not sure how to perform the tests you mentioned, please clarify.

1457 is a leak in the charcoal canister or its plumbing system. my money says its in your plumbing. clogged/disconnected lines.

really though, the 1457, could be anything in your evap emmissions system. canister purge solenoid, 2 way bypass valve, fuel tank pressure sensor, canister vent shut valve, alot of rubber hoses, alot of hard plastic lines, evap canister, etc,etc,ect,etc.blah, blah,blah.

a good DIGITAL multimeter and vacuum pump will ease your pinpointing.

im not sure if haynes or helms carry the info on troubleshooting this problem, but, if they do, it'll be good as a reference map.

PS: my problem was with the two way valve.

I have the Helms manual, a digital meter, and a newly acquired vacuum pump. I just have to wait for a break in the weather to troubleshoot the problem.

Was it necessary to drop the tank when the two way valve was replaced?

when evap testing a small leak, theres a machine filled with some gas, i forgot what, its scented and sensitive to flourecent light, but will work with out 1, all it is, is a machine to determine if the sealed system has a leak by pressurizing the system and looking for the smoke, we use it all the time at the dealer..good for finding vacuum leaks, or any kinda leak

That's cool, unfortunately I don't have access to such a gizmo. I'll see what happens when I try troubleshooting the system.

Well, I've gone as far as I can for now. All the evap hardware, wiring, and vacuume lines under the hood test good. That leaves all the stuff under the car.

Just wondering the cost of repair for your car? I'll probably make an appointment with the dealer soon. Because although I've worked with gas tanks before I don't have some of the gizmos listed in the manual. I'll post what happens.

May also be a bad fuel tank pressure sensor.

Thanks for your reply, the tank pressure sensor is listed as a possible cause but I'm not getting code P0451, P0452, or P0453.

You don't need those codes for it to be a bad FTP sensor. The system is monitored by the FTP sensor. It tels the PCM if the system is in a vaccum or is purging. If the sensor is bad it can give the PCM the impression that there is a leak (or the system is purging) when its really not and you will just be on a wild goose chase. The only way i know how to test it is with a scanner. An open system will read 2.50 volts, which is atmospheric pressure. And when it goes into a vaccum the voltage will goe down.

Thanks. I forgot to mention I ran through the troubleshooting tree and everything under the hood appears to be fine. So that leaves the stuff under the car and although I've worked with gas tanks before I don't want to mess with this one. So I'm off to the dealer. I'll post what happens.
