finally got a 240sx!

well heres my story. i found a 240sx in the ads for $600. i saw it, and the car needed some work, nothing mechanical, just cosmetic. so i decided to buy the car, and on my way home, the engine blew out! the engine had 165k miles on it and i knew it, so i was planning on replacing it anyways. the car had bad fuel injectors when i bought it, so i guess wat was happeneing was that too much oxygen and too little fuel caused the explosion. anyways, im officially in the club, and im determined to find an engine and do the mechanic work myself.

Or a lean condition, whichever you want to say....

Good condition KAs can go for $500. You should really find out exactly what broke first. If its just a piston, then a simple piston swap would be adequite.

Re: finally got a 240sx!

you think that could be it? the engine wont start anymore, and there was oil all over the road, but ill check it. if it is a piston, would i have to have the block machined?

sounds like a piston went through the oil pan. as for having to machine the block, about the only way to really know it to tear it completely down. then see if you can find any real deep gouges. if the block doesn't seem to be scarred, then take it to a shop to have the surfaces machined, and just rebuild it. I would be a great chance to get some hi performance pistons, maybe some for a turbo application. If it is scarred up, then it'll probably be better to just get another engine completely.

Re: finally got a 240sx!

this stuff is all new to me, but how much would getting the blocked machined cost? and what is considered a rebuilt engine? if i machine the block, and replace the pistons, would that be considered a new engie?

well since you dont know how bad the engine is damaged inside the car, best thing to do it obviously take off the oil pan. Then you can go from there, if the piston is jammed in the cylinder then you will have to bore it out... also look around the bottom of the cylinder where the rod broke (if thats what broke) and see if the rod has chiped the block anywhere. Also the rod that broke probably scratched the crank as well, im sure its a big mess in the oil pan as well...

Those KAs are awesome, best thing to do would be prob get another KA from a junk yard or something, and take it all apart (make sure you know how it all goes together, get a manual) then take the block to a shop and might as well give it a 10 or 20 over bore, depending on how much or if any wear in the cylinder walls. If you dont want to bore its cool... i dont know if you would even want to rebuild the new engine you get... so i dont want to waste my time on that not knowing if you would rebuild or not...

if not, then just throw it in there and weihla!!

Re: finally got a 240sx!

well i have no idea how to rebuild an engine, and if i buy one from a junkyard id like to be able to drop it in. however, the engine i have no, which is blown, i am plannign on taking out and apart anyways, just to learn more about it. if its not bad, and all i have to do to it is some boreing, then i might rebuild it myself if that ends up cheaper. if youd like, and you tell me how to rebuild it, be assured you wont be wasting your time because even i i buy a brand new engien for the car, im still taking apart teh old one.

Re: finally got a 240sx!

i would bore it over, and put aftermarket pistons in. If somehow a piston went through the oil pan, then your pretty much done unless you want to buy new crank, connecting rods, pistons, and have it bored and buy alot of shit...
