2003 1.8 Liter Turbo Passat Spark Plugs

When is it necessary to replace your spark plugs? My car is at 43,000 miles, just over two years old. Also, what should I replace them with? I'd prefer not to go to the dealership to buy them. Any tips?

VW reccomends every 40k miles. Use factory parts (1.8t uses platinum plugs.)
