Strut question????

Dealer says I need new ones & top mount plates. Worn out they say. (162,000 mi) Steering is binding but only rarely at this point.

1.)---How do they know the top mount plates need replacing without taking them off?

They wanted $1000. I laughed.... and found a place down the street for around $500 (struts and plates). $350 without top plates.

2.)---Since the plates are almost as much as the struts themselves, what would happen if i just got the struts without plates? What is the function of the mount plate?

They know that top mount plates need replacing because they make a weird sound while you bump.

You can get 4 agx kyb strut for like $400 bucks and each strut mount(kyb) for like $15 bucks

Struts:

Thanks but...No weird sound that I can notice when I hit a bump or rock the car. I think they are just guessing or wanting more repair $'s.

The mounts I need are more along these lines (i think):

http://catalog.drivewire.com/drivewi...rut%20Assembly

They are $70 each and I can get the struts for $80 (don't need fancy ones) each=$300 and I'm more than happy to pay someone $200 to do that job.

Re: Strut question????

All strut mounts do the same damn thing. No such thing as a performance strut mount. So paying 70 bucks for a KYB Strut mount is pointless. The bearing inside yours are prolly shot. While you can just buy a new bearing and over haul it, new generic mounts run like 45 bucks a mount. I pick up 4 mounts that were used for 2 weeks each while my good buddy EVENT was testing all those pricey mounts out and found there was no difference. I paid 80 bucks for 4 new spankin mounts..

Re: Strut question????

The steering is sticking because the thrust bearing (bearing that turns under load, i.e. the cars weight at the appropriate corner) If they go you will experience the steering problem! That's how they know, That's how I know! at 162k miles it's not surprising they are shot really!

Believe me, I don't want performance anything. I want generic cheap everything.

Since the dealer wanted like $150 ea. for delco ones, I thought $70 was ok. All the local places and web sites I checked they were $65-95 just for the cheapest ones. Show me a site for $45 and I'll get 'em. Thanks
